Need advice on difficulty

Unread postby Ree » 17 Sep 2006, 10:00

Hello,

I'm quite an old Heroes series player and recently I have been playing Heroes III Shadow of Death campaigns on the highest difficulty level (Impossible - 200%). Some of the maps were indeed quite tough, especially the Crag Hack campaign, and I did enjoy the difficulty.

I'm thinking of getting back to Heroes IV (I played it looong ago) and now I'm not sure which difficulty setting to choose when playing campaigns. I was thinking of choosing the highest difficulty at first but then again I heard that the AI gets handicapped in this case because of the large wandering stacks. Is that true?

Which is the optimal difficulty to use to have the most aggressive AI possible?

Don't worry about the handicapped AI in the campaigns - it is completely inept anyway, setting the difficulty won't help or harm it very much.

The Life campaign can definitely use Champion difficulty, as can Nature, Order and Death. You may need to decrease the difficulty for Chaos campaign and especially for Might campaign.

All expansion capmaigns are pretty much worthless so I would skip them if I were you.

If you want aggressive AI, don't bother with the supplied campaigns at all, though. AI needs some serious help from the mapmaker and there isn't any in the supplied campaigns. I can recommend A Wind of Thorns (may be too aggressive, in fact) and many of the newer campaigns by experienced mapmakers.

Thanks for your reply.

For those who played both H3 and H4 campaigns (+expansions), which setting did you find more difficult - H3 impossible or H4 champion?

H4 Champion is undoubtedly more difficult at the start (ie. first mission STRESS: First mission only!); after that it's a breeze. H3 Impossible I can't remember too much of, but it can't be as difficult as H4 Champion.

I don't think there's much difference. H4 is somewhat more difficult at the beginning of each campaign, especially in Life, Might and Chaos campaigns (Life - you are still used to Heroes 3 and use a playing style suited for H3, which proves horribly incorrect for Heroes 4; Might - the neutral armies are VERY hard to defeat, after that it's a breeze; Chaos - you need to overcome the urge to capture the town as soon as possible). H3 is a bit more difficult during the campaigns. Overall, both are pretty easy.

If you want challenging campaigns, you need fan-made stuff. A Wind of Thorns especially. You can also try single maps such as My Brother's Keeper or Draconic, those pack more challenge than most campaigns.

In my opinion H IV champion is much more difficult. But it might also be because I am more specialised in H III.
