Skeletons and imps.

Skeletons are slow, but they can be put on a second hero and added to the main hero's army when needed.
Imps simply are the best retaliation triggers of the game. Also good for blocking shooters, scouting purposes, steeds and with an excellent specialty.

I like Squire/Crossbowmen

Ranged attack combined with the chance to stun

My vote goes to Wolf and Sprite. They're great in the early game, enabling you to clear most melee stacks and get an early advantage. The Wolves do tend to get very fragile later, though.

voted orc/rogue
the rogue is very useful for picking up treasure on the map,and the orc can shoot without melee penalty.

also like the crossbowman, cause his shot does high damages, imps because they are useful against caster and for the devil

Wow, bumped after 2 years and four months! Impressive! :D

It's bugged that whole "rogue"-thing. They're called bandits in H4. Someone seem to have forgotten this whilst making this poll. Anyway, it doesn't matter :)

Rogue and Orc, the Orc can back the Rogue up really nicely, and if you do it well, the Rogue just has to give the finishing blow :)!

For me this was a toss up between Sprites & Wolves and Berserkers & Centaurs but went with the Sprites & Wolves because of their speed, no retaliation & double attack. Centaurs are a really great Level 1 creature as are Berserkers, but I don't like not being able to control my Berserkers.

Some of the combinations didn't stand a chance like Rogues & Orcs. Rogues are okay, but I hate those useless Orcs. ;| Or Halflings & Dwarves. Dwarves are a good 'tank' but Halflings are next to worthless, even in large numbers.

That's the price you have to pay for their high stats. Same with the centaurs and their short range.
Halflings are next to worthless, even in large numbers.
I disagree, especially in light of the easy availability of precision.

About halflings and orcs I disagree too.
Its good to have some shooters even or especially in fist part of the game. Moreover halflings are good for kill 4 lvl monsters, and orcs have stun ability.
Online masters knows how use it B-)

Seconded. Halflings are far from useless. They die fairly easily when you get further into the game but their abilities against lvl 4 creatures are superb. Especially with a David's Sling. Nice combo.
Dwarves are what bothers me with this level 1 pair. They're just...they suck. They don't walk very far, they're easily killed and they rarely act as a decent cannon fodder even. For me at least. I exclude them as soon as possible if I have another creature ready to take their place.

I agree with your assessment of dwarves in all but one point: they're not easily killed for a level 1 creature at all! In fact, they're among the most durable!

What exactly is it that the dwarves don't offer but the other melee units (berserkers, squires, bandits) do to protect their shooters?

I'll inform the Dutch midget association immediately what a height-ist they have in their midst! :disagree:
