Heroes 3: Best Character Specialty

Unread postby LordScimitar » 25 Apr 2006, 02:29

Inspired by my own personal musings and quite a few debates on here. And, any "banned" specialties are considered "not banned". If its just clearly far superior to any other specialty, it must be the best!

I just put down the ones I thought were likely to be voted on. At request, I can add more (I think, never edited a poll on this forum).

I'm generalizing creature specialists and spells. If you think one of these is the best (ex: Skeleton specialist/Gorgon Specialist) just vote for the basic generality. Same goes with Support spell (ex: Prayer, Bless, Haste, Resurrection, etc) or offensive spell (Chain Lightning, Meteor Shower, etc)

This ought to be interesting!

*Note-I purposefully left out Gelu and Dracon. Starting with Dragon, and 10 Enchanters, which is basically 10 level 6 creatures, is just overpowered. And the upgrade ability, if it was common with all towns would be added, but this is something obviously added only for the campaign and not regular playthru. Therefore, it was by choice I left them out.

Edit:

I didn't realize you were allowed so few poll options. Thus, I deleted some I originally wanted to put up such as Intelligence, Archery, +Gold/Resource, and Sorcery. If you want one of these choose Other.

Logistics. There's no replacement for actually being able to do more/gather more in a turn.
Far too many people speak their minds without first verifying the quality of their source material.

voted: Armorer
I had pick Armorer as I can tweak hero speed on other various ways. But it may depend on Scenario, somewhere you will always need "other" specialists just for openning. ;)

Logistics by a mile (only the +2 speed is anywhere close). I suppose Nucleon would disagree with that though :D

Logistics, though I considered +2 speed as well.

+2 speed, for sure...Logistics is nice, but I'd rather have an advantage on the battlefield..

Vote necromancy
Vidomina/Isra at level 20 raise 60% of casualties as skeleton WOW

For non Necopolis heroes I would have chosen +2 speed

Voted Resistance.
Its just satisfying to see the opponent going crazy with spells and almost all of the spells get resisted by my troops :D

Logistics comes close second.

I have a habit of going with an Armorer

I also voted Logistics. I must say I am surprised no one has picked offense yet. But, yet, people have picked Armorer, which, if my understanding is correct, Offense is better. Take equal everything, but change so that one has 30% offense and one 30% armorer, the offense will win over the armorer.

I always thought offense was number 2, and +2 speed number 3, but I'm getting surprised at these numbers.

By the way, after this topic has been up for a week, the winner will be whomever gets the most votes. Would anyone want to see a whole new vote for second and third and fourth place? Or at least top 3? Because just "second place" doesn't really count, as if number 1 gets 50% or more of the votes, that 50% could easily all go towards another specialty. Just wondering!

If both would have the same percentage, the Armorer skill would be better. 1.3*0.7=0.91, meaning a ten percent damage reduction. Increasing the percentages means increasing the reduction.

Logistics is indeed very good, but I dont like the fact that logistics specialists tend to be might heroes. (exept Dessa, if I remember correctly) I love also intelligence specialists and resurrection specialists. Both not so much because of increased effectiveness, but mostly because it is nice thing to have from the start. When it comes to increased effectiveness, then logistic rules.

Ah, you are right, but, now I remember my point of Offense versus Armorer.

Basic Offense-10%
Basic Armor-5%
Advanced Offense-20%
Advanced Armor-10%
Expert Offense-30%
Expert Armor-15%

Now, you can clearly see that Offense destroys Armor. At level 20, Tzar now only has the same percentage that Crag Hack does at level 1. Offense is twice as high a percentage, and thus, since the specialists are 5% of the original skill, each level Crag Hack is getting twice the advantage of Tzar.

Thus, I don't see how anyone can say Armor>Offense.

Gaidal Cain is right, offence increases damage done where as armor decrese damage recived. they are not the same, 50% armor halves the damage but 100% offence is needed to double the damage. offence is better at the beginning, amorer is better at the end. i don't know the limits of armor but if it can get to 75%, it will own offence.

that's why in diablo2 as the percentages gets bigger, the same % damage reduction is better than hp bonus and same % cold res pierce from cold mastery is better than damage boost from fire mastery.

anyway, voted for +2 speed, because of the retalliation system means heroes 3 is all about fast creatures, with +2 speed 50 archdevils is almost a match for 50 achangels but without the speed they get slaugtered, which is why i don't like the heroes 3 retalliation system, and why i got upset about heroes 5

Logistics - for all heroes no matter what class, my vote went there ;)

But when we look on specific classes, lot of other skills come in mind too:

few examples:

Resistance - on rampart hero and troops gives huge bonus as we know that some rampart troops have magic resistance

Necromancy - already explained (Vidomina ;) )

Offensive spell - famous hero from Tower = S_ _ _ _ _ ;)

But as I said for all classes Logistics is the most useful skill, because you never know on which terrain you could start the map :D

He does indeed, but not by much.

IHO, +2 Speed is the most outrageous one. You can deal with making a hero go faster (non-specialized Logisticians, equipped with fast creatures) ou you can have a map which favors Navigation and/or Pathfinding, but this +2 battlefield speed comes handy every time. It gives you spellcasting initiative. It makes your dwarves and golems worthy troops til the end.

That's too much; Usually, Nucleon simply bans Mullich.

Past that, every hero who's got Diplomacy; They'r assembling multiple armies while you're assembling but one.

Then, and only then, comes the Logistics specialist on Nucleon's scale of "Heroes to watch for".

Voted Offensive spell. Even early in the game, I love annoying enemy heroes and towns with two castings of Chain Lightning, then retreat. If I am starting with Tower town, I only lose 4-6 gargoyles, and my enemy losses are huge, compared to that. But I always try to get Logistics as a secondary skill. Although I voted Offensive spell, Logistics is super.
The truth is out there
