New to the series

Unread postby sigil » 27 Jul 2010, 05:54

Would you recommend playing each homm in order as far as the story is concerned? Also I have read that there are story events that take place in mm games. Should I play any of those prior or in between any of the homm games so I can get the most out of the story? Thank you.

Wejcome to the CH forums sigil.
I suppose you could play the games in series. That's one way to do it. A lot depends on your system. If it was me, I'd go heroes II then III and so on. Heroes I does'nt give a whole lot of story but introduces you to the mechanics of HoMM. HoMM II picks up the story pretty good from there. Oncr you go through the story, then it comes down to which Heroes games you like the most. HoMM II was the most successful, HoMM III is the most varied, with WoG and all the newest stuff coming out for it almost daily, HoMM Iv, ahh ... you'll see, and finally HV, is the best graphics, if that's your kinda thing. :D

About the story, yes, you need to play it in order and you need to play Might and Magic games as well. This is the order to play them, if you want to know everything about the universe:
  1. Heroes Chronicles: Warlords of the Wasteland
  2. Heroes Chronicles: Conquest of the Underworld
  3. Might and Magic I: Secret of the Inner Sanctum
  4. Heroes Chronicles: Revolt of the Beastmasters
  5. Heroes Chronicles: Masters of the Elements
  6. Might and Magic II: Gates to Another World
  7. Heroes Chronicles: The World Tree
  8. Heroes Chronicles: The Fiery Moon
  9. Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra
  10. Might and Magic IV and V: World of XEEN
  11. (semi-official) Might and Magic: Swords of XEEN
  12. Heroes of Might and Magic I: A Stategic Quest
  13. Heroes of Might and Magic II: The Succession Wars
  14. Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Shadow of Death
  15. Heroes Chronicles: Clash of the Dragons
  16. Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven
  17. Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia
  18. Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor
  19. Heroes of Might and Magic III: Armageddon's Blade
  20. Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer
  21. Heroes Chronicles: The Sword of Frost
  22. Might and Magic IX: The Writ of Fate
  23. Heroes of Might and Magic IV (and it's expansions?)
  24. (book) The Sea of Mist
  25. Warriors of Might and Magic
  26. Shifters of Might and Magic
  27. Legends of Might and Magic
  28. (book) The Dreamwright
  29. (book) The Shadowsmith
The first 6 chronicles don't have a specific time defined, though, so they might be played in slightly different order. It is also not certain when MM1-MM5 took place, since they used their own calendar system, but this timeline should be pretty much right. Also note that a whole lot of story is written in the manuals of the games, so make sure you read those as well. Also note that on the whole, Might and Magic is a Science Fantasy universe, so don't be surprised if you see technological things.

Oh, and Heroes of Might and Magic V does not belong in the Might and Magic universe. Ubisoft created their own (Warhammerish) Ashan universe.

MMIX is before HoMMIV.
I think also HC:MotE is before HC:RotB.

Generally speaking - you can play MM1-5 without knowing anything about HoMM. Same for Heroes Chronicles - you don't need to know MM1-5 story.

Great Emerald, I'm surprised at you, stealing my new timeline like this and posting it around willy-nilly!!

You're meant to wait until it's properly sourced and referenced first. :P

All right, adjusted that, Avonu. And yes, you can, just that it won't give you that good of a time understanding. Besides, playing two Heroes games after one MM game would overall be a good change of pace.

Corlagon, I used not only that, but two more sources, too :P

While we're on the subject, did Gavin Magnus appear anywhere besides the H3 games?!

It's not like there's much story to get, especially in the early games... Just start with Heroes III and Might and Magic VI, because those are the ones that are generally considered the favorites. The rest is up to your own discretion.
Back from the dead? Maybe.

You forgot about HoMM2 - without this game you will miss A LOT of story in next titles.

Chronicles are part of H3...

Did M&M7 come out before Chronicles?!

That's not true, there is a lot of story especially in MM3 and MM4&5. And Chronicles, too. In MM2 as well, if you actually read the manual.

MM8 was before Shadow of Death actually. Which is probably why Sandro is a nice guy in the former. :devious:

There is. You would be surprised at the amount of story in this series from MM3 onwards. Some games have had fairly throwaway or optional plots (Heroes I, MM6) but it gets way more complex than an average series when you look at all of it.

And even so, there's only one terrible facepalm moment I can think of, and that's Kalindra in MM5 turning back from a vampire into a human because "my willpower has been boosted by my magic crown!"

So Gavin was first in M&M... so what was his story then?!

He appeared in MM7, not in MM6. MM6 is on Enroth.

That means you read it wrong. H3:RoE was released earlier than MM7. Not entirely certain if he appeared there, though.
Anyway, the link you want is this:
