Heroes 3: What is Mages, Monks, Liches used Spell Power

Unread postby UndeadHalfOrc » 24 Mar 2010, 03:42

What if instead of using the hero's attack skill to increase damage, these units relied on the spell power of their hero to add to their attack skill?

I don't think that makes sense. I've always felt that hero attack and defense was an abstraction of a hero's leadership ability. His presence and command of the troops increases their combat effectiveness. That doesn't change if the attacks are magical.

You could make an argument for a hero lending his mana to improve magical attacks, but we kinda already have that. Casting Bless on a stack of Mages, for example, has that effect.

Maybe if they used it for casting their spells or something it would make more sense...

How would this affect the game's balance, though?

It would destroy the ballence of the game. Imagine a hero that could cast a 2000 point implosion and give his units a bonus to there attack equal to his spell power. It would be hideous.

You can make one in H4... and can also kill one, too.

Joking aside, I think the attack skill bonus is fine the way it is.

If he managed to get that many points into Spell Power why wouldn't he also be able to get as many points into Attk instead?

BTW I should specify that this thread was created with silly intent - not even in my balance patch would I consider changing such a fundamental game mechanic. So no need to bring up balance issues ;)

But with that said... let's give the other 3 non-might factions a unit powered by their hero's magic.
Dungeon - Medusas, but only when they use their gaze melee attack.
Inferno - Familiars. That's what they are, after all - familiars are traditionally, beings summoned by wizards and powered by their magic.
Rampart - Unicorns. But only if the hero is female, and a virgin.

And Enchanters, of course. I should have included them in the original topic, them being related with mages and monks.

The OP mentioned how it would replace Atk.
