Sudoku

Unread postby Asheera » 08 Jul 2008, 13:28

This popular Japanese game (su = number, doku = single/unique) requires logic and concentration.

The rules are pretty simple: you must complete all free cells (in our case the '-' signs) with numbers from 1 to 9, so that each row, each column and each 3x3 area separated by the grid (in our case the '_' and '|' signs) has all numbers from 1 to 9 and only once. Each Sudoku game has only one unique final result.
There are a lot of levels of difficulties, based on the amount of numbers that are predefined and how these numbers are placed.

Here's how we'll play: I give the first game and whoever finishes it first gives a new one (if there's any problem - e.g. can't find a Sudoku game - I'll give it; I have A LOT of Sudoku games)

Oh, and don't get upset if someone finishes a Sudoku game when you have 90% of it done. This is no competition, we just do it for fun, right? ;)

Ok, here's the first one (it's the easiest Sudoku I could find)

Code: Select all

- 3 4 | - - 5 | 6 1 8
- - - | 1 7 8 | 3 4 -
2 8 1 | - - 3 | - 5 -
_____________________
8 2 6 | - 5 7 | - - 4
5 - - | 8 1 9 | - - 3
1 - - | 2 4 - | 7 8 5
_____________________
- 5 - | 7 - - | 4 2 9
- 7 9 | 6 8 2 | - - -
3 1 2 | 5 - - | 8 7 -
Note, if you post a Sudoku game use the

Code: Select all

tags, so that the text has a fixed width.

I'll give some tips: first, never GUESS. Place a number only when you're sure it fits in the appropriate place.

Now some practical tips:

Let's analyze the Sudoku game I gave above. Let's look in the 3x3 area in the upper-right. Let's try to place the 7 number, but where? As you can see, there is only one place you can place it because otherwise you would have two 7s either on the seventh column from the left or the second row from up. So we place it where it belongs:
- 3 4 | - - 5 | 6 1 8
- - - | 1 7 8 | 3 4 -
2 8 1 | - - 3 | - 5 7
_____________________
8 2 6 | - 5 7 | - - 4
5 - - | 8 1 9 | - - 3
1 - - | 2 4 - | 7 8 5
_____________________
- 5 - | 7 - - | 4 2 9
- 7 9 | 6 8 2 | - - -
3 1 2 | 5 - - | 8 7 -
Now let's place a 2 in that same 3x3 area (since it is missing). There's only one place for it, because otherwise we would end up with two 2s on the third row from up.

Code: Select all

- 3 4 | - - 5 | 6 1 8
- - - | 1 7 8 | 3 4 2
2 8 1 | - - 3 | - 5 7
_____________________
8 2 6 | - 5 7 | - - 4
5 - - | 8 1 9 | - - 3
1 - - | 2 4 - | 7 8 5
_____________________
- 5 - | 7 - - | 4 2 9
- 7 9 | 6 8 2 | - - -
3 1 2 | 5 - - | 8 7 -
What's the last number missing in that 3x3 area? A 9! So let's place it:

Code: Select all

- 3 4 | - - 5 | 6 1 8
- - - | 1 7 8 | 3 4 2
2 8 1 | - - 3 | 9 5 7
_____________________
8 2 6 | - 5 7 | - - 4
5 - - | 8 1 9 | - - 3
1 - - | 2 4 - | 7 8 5
_____________________
- 5 - | 7 - - | 4 2 9
- 7 9 | 6 8 2 | - - -
3 1 2 | 5 - - | 8 7 -

Have fun! :)

Note: if it is too easy you can request a difficulty change, I have 7 different types of difficulties (this one is the easiest)

;) I like doing sudokus. That's what I do when I'm at the toilet (appart from what I'm really doing there, of course). :D

7 3 4 | 9 2 5 | 6 1 8
9 6 5 | 1 7 8 | 3 4 2
2 8 1 | 4 6 3 | 9 5 7

5 4 7 | 8 1 9 | 2 6 3
1 9 3 | 2 4 6 | 7 8 5
_____________________
6 5 8 | 7 3 1 | 4 2 9
4 7 9 | 6 8 2 | 5 3 1
3 1 2 | 5 9 4 | 8 7 6

Ok, here's a hard one:

Code: Select all

- - 7 | - - - | - - 5
- - 8 | - - - | 9 4 -
- - - | 6 1 3 | - - -
_____________________
1 9 - | - - - | - - -
8 - - | 5 - 7 | - - 3
- - - | - - - | - 5 2
_____________________
- - - | 9 2 8 | - - -
- 5 4 | - - - | 7 - -
3 - - | - - - | 6 - -

And a somewhat easy one for other less-experienced users:

Code: Select all

2 - - | 3 - - | 8 - -
6 7 - | 9 - - | 4 - -
5 - - | 7 2 - | 1 - -
_____________________
- 3 - | 1 9 2 | - 4 -
4 1 - | - - - | - 6 9
- 8 - | 6 5 4 | - 3 -
_____________________
- - 9 | - 8 3 | - - 2
- - 4 | - - 9 | - 1 5
- - 7 | - - 1 | - - 4

I don't really want to find one to post here.(mainly because I'm supposed to be typing up a page for homework) However, here's the hard one.

Code: Select all

2 1 7 | 4 8 9 | 3 6 5
6 3 8 | 2 7 5 | 9 4 1
5 4 9 | 6 1 3 | 2 8 7
_____________________
1 9 5 | 8 3 2 | 4 7 6
8 2 6 | 5 4 7 | 1 9 3
4 7 3 | 1 9 6 | 8 5 2
_____________________
7 6 1 | 9 2 8 | 5 3 4
9 5 4 | 3 6 1 | 7 2 8
3 8 2 | 7 5 4 | 6 1 9
Sometimes I mess up, and don't catch it, though. And sometimes I mess up and do catch it, like I actually did on this one. Though, I still might have done the first.

More Sudokus :-D

The difficulty increases with the Sudoku index.

Sudoku #1 (let's consider the previous unresolved one Sudoku #0)

Code: Select all

7 - - | 3 - - | - 5 -
6 8 - | 2 - - | - 1 -
4 - - | 1 8 - | - 9 -
_____________________
- - 2 | - 7 - | 8 - -
- - 8 | 9 - 5 | 6 - -
- - 4 | - 1 - | 3 - -
_____________________
- 1 - | - 9 8 | - - 4
- 5 - | - - 1 | - 6 2
- 4 - | - - 6 | - - 7
Sudoku #2

Code: Select all

- - - | 5 - - | - 1 -
- - 7 | 6 - - | - 3 -
2 - 9 | 4 - - | - 5 -
_____________________
6 - 4 | - 7 - | - - -
5 - - | - 4 - | - - 8
- - - | - 3 - | 5 - 2
_____________________
- 3 - | - - 2 | 6 - 4
- 1 - | - - 9 | 3 - -
- 8 - | - - 4 | - - -
Sudoku #3

Code: Select all

- 7 - | - - 6 | - - 5
9 4 - | - 7 - | - - -
1 8 - | - - - | - - -
_____________________
- - 2 | - - - | 7 - -
- - 1 | 3 - 5 | 8 - -
- - 9 | - - - | 4 - -
_____________________
- - - | - - - | - 2 6
- - - | - 9 - | - 8 7
3 - - | 1 - - | - 4 -
Sudoku #4

Code: Select all

5 - - | - - 1 | - 8 -
- - - | - 4 7 | - 9 -
1 - - | - - - | - 6 -
_____________________
- - 7 | 8 - - | 5 - -
- - 6 | - 3 - | 4 - -
- - 9 | - - 2 | 1 - -
_____________________
- 4 - | - - - | - - 3
- 2 - | 1 6 - | - - -
- 8 - | 3 - - | - - 2

Now this is a really hard one. It's the same as the other ones only that it is 16x16 instead of 9x9 and instead of numbers from 1 to 9 you place numbers from 0 to 9 and letters from A to F:

Sudoku #5

Code: Select all

3 - - - | - - E - | D 5 2 - | F - - 9
- 9 - A | - C B 2 | - - F - | D 0 - 7
- - - 2 | 1 - 3 - | - 9 - 6 | A E 8 -
- 5 B - | D F 9 6 | 4 - - 0 | - - - -
_____________________________________
- - 1 9 | - - - - | F - 4 2 | 3 - 7 -
- D - F | - 4 7 E | - 1 - - | 0 - C 5
E A 4 7 | - 1 - 8 | - C - - | - D 6 F
- 8 - C | - 9 F 5 | E - - - | 1 - A B
_____________________________________
1 - - 5 | 0 - - 7 | B A - - | 8 - 4 D
0 - F - | - 8 5 - | 6 4 7 - | - 2 - -
A 6 - - | E - - - | - F - 1 | - 5 3 C
- - 9 D | B - - - | - - C 8 | - A - 6
_____________________________________
D 3 5 - | 7 0 - 4 | C - - - | - B - -
- C E - | - - 8 - | - B 1 4 | 5 7 2 A
- - 2 - | 5 E C 3 | 8 - 6 - | - 1 F -
8 4 - - | - B 2 1 | 0 - E 5 | - C - -

And here's another 'special' Sudoku: it's called Sudoku Mosaic and, in addition to the normal rules, has one more: There are no adjacent cells from the same group. The groups are as following: Small (1,2,3), Medium (4,5,6) and Big (7,8,9). In other words, you can't have a 1 near a 2 or 3, a 4 near a 5 or 6 and so on...

NOTE: adjacent means only cells that share the same edge. A diagonal cell is NOT adjacent.

Oh and it's pretty difficult

Sudoku Mosaic

Code: Select all

- - - | - 1 - | - - -
- 7 - | - - - | - - -
- - - | - - - | - - -
_____________________
- - - | - 9 2 | 6 - -
- - - | - - 6 | - - 9
- - 6 | - - - | - - 1
_____________________
- - - | - - 4 | - - -
- - - | - 5 8 | - 6 -
- - - | - - - | - - -

Ok ok enough for now :)
