You lack of knowledge is disheartening.

Compulsive-obsesive behaviour was a common trait of vampires in the old tales... stopping to count beads on the ground and that sort of thing.

well my vampiric knowledge stems from the sources of Anne Rice for the most part, so that doesn't really work for me

Vampires? Are you saying there's Vampires there!?

As a Hellsing-obsessed person I cannot resist the compulsive urge to comment on that.

And yes vampries do enjoy counting things. It's not just something made up by Sesame Street.
Anne Rice's vampires do not stray too far from what they should be, but no source of vampiric knowledge is compleat without comparing it to others (to use a quaint spelling).

Irishman wins world oyster opening championship
Ireland was the proud winner of the 2006 World Oyster Opening Championship on Saturday, beating off competition from 17 other countries to open 30 oysters in the fastest time.

At 2 minutes 35 seconds, Irish restaurateur Michael Moran was five seconds ahead of Sweden's Hasse Johannesson and 46 seconds faster than Britain's Frederick Lindford.

"It's just great to bring it home for Ireland," said Mr Moran, whose father Willie took the title twice in the 1970s and whose time of 1 minute 31 seconds remains unbeaten.

"I put in a big effort and it paid off. I can't believe it," Mr Moran, 23, said.

The secret, he said, was a steady hand with the oyster knife.

"It has to be a smooth movement or you risk crunching the shell and then you get points taken off for grit."

It was the first win for Ireland in 10 years but the country's 15th overall in the four-decade history of the competition, which has long been a major feature of the Galway Oyster Festival, now in its 52nd year.

The festival draws visitors from around the world, as much for the Irish "craic" as for the oysters, which mollusc aficionados say derive a distinctive sweetness from Ireland's Atlantic waters.
as for the vampires, I have read a few different opinions on them, but AR's is more complete to me

Surgeon tries to keep abreast of theft
A German plastic surgeon cheated out of payment by women has handed pictures of their enlarged breasts to police, in the hope the photos will help trace them.

"The women registered under fake names," Michael Koenig, a surgeon in Cologne, told Bild newspaper.

"After the operations, which lasted about an hour, they just ran away."

'Tanja' went out for "fresh air" after 8,000-euro ($A13,000) surgery to enlarge her breasts.

"She never came back and never paid," Dr Koenig said.

He now plans to demand payment in advance.

The newspaper has published a five-column picture of Tanja's naked breasts.

"It's probably the most unusual wanted poster police ever had," the newspaper wrote.

Outback trip in reverse stuns police
Police say they were astounded at the actions of a man they say was trying to drive from Kalgoorlie, in south-eastern Western Australia, to Perth, in reverse.

Police from Perth's specialist traffic enforcement group were just outside Coolgardie, 50 kilometres west of Kalgoorlie, yesterday afternoon when they say they saw a car coming over a hill very slowly.

Officers pulled him over and allege the 23-year-old Perth man told them his transmission had failed so he was driving the 500 kilometres in reverse.

It is alleged he told officers he had reached speeds of 80 kilometres an hour but had had to slow down to 65 kph because he was swerving too much.

He was charged with reckless driving and is due to appear in Coolgardie court on Monday.

The War on Drugs:
Canada troops battle 10-foot Afghan marijuana plants

OTTAWA, Canada (Reuters) -- Canadian troops fighting Taliban militants in Afghanistan have stumbled across an unexpected and potent enemy -- almost impenetrable forests of marijuana plants 10 feet tall.

General Rick Hillier, chief of the Canadian defense staff, said Thursday that Taliban fighters were using the forests as cover. In response, the crew of at least one armored car had camouflaged their vehicle with marijuana.

"The challenge is that marijuana plants absorb energy, heat very readily. It's very difficult to penetrate with thermal devices. ... And as a result you really have to be careful that the Taliban don't dodge in and out of those marijuana forests," he said in a speech in Ottawa, Canada.

"We tried burning them with white phosphorous -- it didn't work. We tried burning them with diesel -- it didn't work. The plants are so full of water right now ... that we simply couldn't burn them," he said.
Even successful incineration had its drawbacks.
