Fantasy style

Unread postby Akul » 11 Dec 2006, 18:52

Which of thiese kinds of fantasy stories you like the most?

Fairy Tales
Fantasies that children enjoj. However, even for the older generations there is something nice about theme.

Myth and Legends alike
Kind of fantasy that:
-may be based on some real legend/myth
-great and powerful heroes who fight evil
-often give a feel that world depends on the hero

Adventure
-LoTR
-heroes of the storyline are traveling for most of the time
-may contain elements of other kinds of fantasy as well

Modern
-Forgotten Realms
-magic is completely normal. Noone is suprised when he sees it
-heroes are in parties and every of theme is class for himself
-in most cases, the story isn't about saving the world

Realistic
-ASoIaF
-tough still fantasy, it is mostly based on normal world (middle age mostly) and magic is not completely normal. In fact, it is a WOW!!
-realism and realistic decisions are the most important part of it. Powerful heroes are changed with normal people who menage to survive

Dark/apocaliptic
-story is dark, scary and there is no much happines
-a hero brings light back to the world - this is not a must be!
-may have horror elements

Discus, discus, discus!!!
And please, don't complain about the given options. I won't reply on such posts!
I am back and ready to... ready to... post things.

I complain about the given options.
Veldryn 15:15 And Vel found a dirty old jawbone of a walrus and put forth his hand, and took it, and in his unholy rage, he slew thirty four thousand men and children therewith.

Obviously you never read an uncensored fairy tale.

And i rather enjoy how well the story is told or how the world is then its kind.

It really is quite hard to choose. I like Robert E. Howard (Conan), which is a hero against the world. I like Raymond E. Feist (Riftwar, Empire, Serpentwar etc.), which is an adventure. I like Piers Anthony (Incarnations of Immortality), which is mostly realistic. I like John Morressy (Kedrigern), which is a fairy tale. I love Shattered World by Michael Reeves (I think), which is closer to an AD&D feel than Forgotten Realms themselves. The only one I don't like much is dark/apocalyptic - I prefer other genres for that (1984 or Battle Royale aren't really fantasy)

Same for me I guess.I like the settings in which such stories take place. Not necessarily a magic-friendly place, nor medieval but mysterious with interesting characters and a good plot.Either when the setting is explored or not.
The dark/apocalyptic are a bit too gloomy/hopeless and don't have the vibrant feeling of adventure and intrigue.Nor allow for some funny/heartwarming situations.Depends.
I, for one, am dying to find out what colour they paint Michael's toenails.

Recently, I've read the Harry Potter series and the two parts of the Eragon series that have been released (Eragon, Eldest). Maybe this thread would've been better without a poll (because i like LoTR too...and let's not forget the other countless excellent fantasy movies based on books).

I like the first three options.
1) Wizard of Oz is my absolute favourite here.
2) I'd say certain parts of the Silmarillion belong here.
3) LotR, obviously.
4) I don't think I've ever seen anything like that, but from the description it sounds rather boring.
5) Funny, but somehow Mary Poppins also fits here (and I like Mary Poppins): based on normal world, magic is spectacular, decisions are realistical. The Secret Garden also pops into mind.
6) Haven't seen this either.

Let's ignore what I underlined...shall we?
OK, I'll admit there aren't that many good movies based on books, but there are some. LoTR once again, Harry Potter (except number two, but I didn't like the second book anyway), Eragon looks like it's going to be awesome (i hope so...it's getting a lot of hype).

There have to be other ones *strains mind looking for answers*:

Let's see:

Ella Enchanted: Hmm....umm...that one was terrible (and I read the book, was completely disappointed)

Conan: In my vague childhood memories I remember how bad some of those where (there were some good ones and bad ones).

Umm....hehe.

Guess you're right, DL :-D.

That's cause most of them fall under SF. All you have to do is imagine Mad Max with mana instead of oil. :D

wow, i like all of them too, and they are an eclectic group .... the one about Chronos was a challenge to read though! For Love of Evil was my favourite, you should read that DL, it's all about you and your beginnings

great call

I'm not voting, too many choices that I like, plus some overlap IMO ... as for fairy tales, anyone read Fairy Tale?
