Great fantasy artists? (here be pictures)

Unread postby Swordmaster » 09 Sep 2006, 18:34

The topic says it all. Do you have any favorite fantasy artists?

My favorite in fantasy art must be Larry Elmores painting for MM6:

(And arrest me if such a topic has been created before)

I have seen some beautiful art, but my memory doesn't serve me as to the artist :(. One of my favorites was on a poster. It depicted an enormous castle sitting on a big hill in front of a smaller hill. The sky was dark and white/yellow lightning was flashing everywhere (man I wish I had it and a scanner ;) Raising to the level of the first hill was a black dragon that was about as big as the entire castle. Blueish electricity was gathering in it's mouth and flowing slightly down its back. Standing on the small hill was a rather small figure. It was a female elf (of course scantily clad, do people ever make them anything but anymore?) holding aloft what looked like a twig. She had shimmering silverish hair and the 'stick' (which was probably ment to be a wand) had a white smoke rising out of it to form what would become one of my most favorite fantasy creatures. It looked like a pegasus with a horn (only do to magic made to enormous size).

Now a few people have depicted a pegasus with a horn, but to my knowledge they never actually had a name. So I suggest Unisys (should be Unisus, but wanted a flavor to it). Even created a D&D creature out of the idea :). Here is a link to some really great picks of Dragons (my second fav myth creature lol..warning some ...dicey picks here. /www.isidore-of-seville.com/dragons/ of these I like Staney Morrison's best cause they arn't as cheesy as the others.

I had planed to make an Equilibris map based on this picture. Perhaps when the new version is released I will.

Does he have any pictures that don't involve destruction and/or danger?

Wow, these are all great. I really admire these artists' skills and eye for details. Also I've always admired people who can actually draw or paint exactly what they see or exactly what they had in mind

Frank Frazetta is still the best of the best :

I also love works from french comic-books artists, namely Philippe Druillet...

...and Caza :

I like when there is a SF flavour to fantasy illustration. (Probably why I liked the old M&M universe so much)
