Don't know if the non-Scandinavians will know what I'm talking about, but Wenche Foss just died today, aged 93.

Foss was considered the greatest Norwegian theatrical actresses of all time - a true diva, Norway's Elizabeth Taylor for the theatre. Last year, she was honoured with a statue in front of the Norwegian national theatre, and the Government has stated that it will give her a state funeral - an honour not given to many. Well-known for her social commitment as well as professional attitude towards her trade, Foss will no doubt go down in history as one of the all-time greats; the sort of person who ends up on stamps and coins, or gets buildings named after them.

Speaking of Liz Taylor: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-10881322

And it's been a week already, why did no one post it yet?

She was a beautiful lady, but she was out of movies for so long, it is understandable that many might have thought she was dead for a while.

A very funny show, I first saw it when I was stationed in the UK and have watched it as it occasionally plays over here. A sad loss. :(

Grete Waitz (57) just died today ... Strange - I didn't even know she was ill, but apparently it was the big C that got Norway's best long-distance runner of all time.

9 NY Marathon wins, several world records, lots of medals from various championships ... Well, I guess no matter how fit you are ...

When Jerry Seinfeld talked about the NY marathon, the quote was something like: "What's there to see? A girl from Norway, a guy from Kenya, and 20.000 losers." :D

The ESPN show Outside the Lines did a brief commentary on her. I found interesting during first NY marathon she almost quit after 18 miles with one thought on her mind, how mad she was at her husband for talking her into running it. Well she of course did not quit, but went on to win.

Yeah, I also saw that documentary about the founder of the NY marathon's fight against cancer ... Waitz was the one who "escorted" him through the whole run and crossed the finish with him.

Yeah, I guess that's just about the only time this thread will be used in a celebratory manner.

Yes, because there are so few occasions when humans celebrate another's death...
