It's a low-fantasy series that revolves around a war to claim the Iron Throne and crown of the land of Westeros and the looming return of a monstrous, supernatural race called the Others, who are set to screw over the entire world if the war goes on and everyone keeps ignoring them. The books are also notorious for their inclination toward murdering major characters, but I won't get fully into that because spoilers.

Basically, just imagine a much darker, slightly less fantasy-ish HoMM with a whole lot more manipulative political intrigue.

I'm hoping that by the end he pulls a 360 and everything goes high-fantasy in terms of magic... tricking the "serious" folk into reading actual fantasy by making them think it's a historical novel (the plot is basically War of the Roses with some Borgias) with a little magic...

A good science fiction book is the Succession series by Scott Westerfeld. It's two books ('The Risen Empire', & 'The Killing Of Worlds') that were originally supposed to be published as one book, until the publisher said no unless it was split up into 2 separate books because it was too long (over 800 pages).

Also, Ben Bova writes some good science fiction books about the Future. He's been writing books for decades, he's so old that his first book was about the Soviet Union beating the United States into space, written 5 years before it happened. That book was never published however, because the publisher he approached about it told him that while it was a great story, if he published it Senator Joseph McCarthy would probably go after both their heads in his Communist Witch Hunt, for daring to suggest that the Soviet Union could beat the United States at anything.

I thought it way before the show was even heard of when one of my friends whoo's a fan told me about it and i looked it up on wiki... and i only read the first few lines of synopsis, to avoid spoilers... (also, Jon Snow was obviously not Ned's)...

Just a quick message to let you all know I'm still alive ;)

Just finished the Eragon series, liked it, starting 'His Dark Materials' - like what I've read so far.

This is definitely true and not just someone posting it to cover their tracks after torturing the password out of Thelonious, before the ritual sacrifice...

I know a lot of things. Hmm - Northern lights is very different from the movie 'the golden compass'. But then again, aren't most books different?
