your avatars

Unread postby gondalore » 23 Feb 2006, 09:55

it think that having to fix a pic that you might want to use as your avatar should have to be that limited on kb and size , no other site i know of has such restrictions, and even when you have squeezed a pic down to where you think it will fit it still doesn't seem to fit.

this is very frustrating. so am asking why is there such a restiction on kb and size.
everything is better with laughter and a wee bit of pixie dust:)

Coz it's fun?

Seriously now, if the size got any bigger it would just look stupid.

To my best knowledge all sites have some limits for avatar and signatures. I do not know if our current rules are too restrictive or not. For me they are enough. Most importantly, one shouldn't judge you by the look of your avatar, but the posts that you make.

BTW, what is wrong with you current unicorn/elf avatar? IMO it looks very good.

EZBoards don't have any restrictions on the size of your avatar pic because you do not load them up to the board... you just POINT to the pic that you have stored somewhere else. (Like on Geocities or PhotoBucket.) The Forum automatically resizes the pic to fit in the little space.

These boards actually store your avatar using Angelspit's space. In order to keep some people from eating up all that space with monster sized files, we have restrictions. Some of our forum members seem to find it entertaining to see just how fancy they can get within the alloted space.

When someone are using 1025x768 sized avatars, then you just know they have gone too far!!! :D

I like making my own avatars, and see how they'll fith within the limited kb size and pic size, think I have 50+ avatars for my chosing just for this board ;|

The current limit is 12144 bytes. I could increase it if there's a real need for it, but I don't how it would prevent anyone from using a decent avatar.
I'm on Steam and Xbox Live.

I'll just add to the 12144 bytes size, that the size of the avatar is also limited to 80x80 px. Using much larger avatars would heavely increase the download time for users with slow connections.

Yes. When I had slow connection, there was a website which I visited that we could have avatars with 150 kb and something like 100 x 100 . When it was loading, a sparkling, dazzling light came from all the avatars, moving, shrinking, blopping...and it was painful thinking that we would have to go to the next page. :(

Just my 2¢ (maybe less): Many (maybe most) messages are short, usually less then 3 lines. Making avatars bigger would increase the blank space between each message and lower the amount of informations (ie messages) on the screen, which would make it less effective and more time consuming on bigger topics.

So I think the current size is very well balanced, big enough to display nice and readable pictures, and small enough to avoid too much waste of visual space.

I agree with Wildbear. I think the the current size is fine. Make them too much larger and it becomes to distracting.
