removing battle000.wav

Unread postby Salamandre » 24 May 2006, 19:26

I know it is not related to WOG but I figured someone here will know about:

Is there any way to remove the music when the battle begin, thus to speed the game a lot? Someone wrote in the old forum it is located at battle000wav. but I did research after research and such file doesnt exist.

The files to remove (or change) are in the MP3 folder.

They are:

combat01.mp3
combat02.mp3
combat03.mp3
combat04.mp3

Unfortunately, those arent the files for the begin of the battle. You know, that music (4-5 sec) when you cant move yet.

I cant find that file

It may sound crazy but when playing Chaser I fight some 2000 battles or more. 2000x4 sec means that music took about 13 hours in whole game. Crazy...

Okay, I checked it out and found the files.

The files are in Heroes3.snd in the Data folder.

There are 8 different files for start-of-battle music:

battle00.wav
battle01.wav
battle02.wav
battle03.wav
battle04.wav
battle05.wav
battle06.wav
battle07.wav

To override them, all you need to do is put "blank" wav files with the same names into the Data folder. The game will then use those instead of the files contained in Heroes3.snd.

The other option (the one I normally use) is to simply turn off Sound Effects. :)

(BTW, 2000x4=8000 seconds which is 133.3333333 minutes, which is 2.22222222 hours, so not quite as bad, but I agree it's still a lot and can be annoying.)

Yes, I believe so. It should be about 14.8 MB in size (the information pop-up that's displayed in your screen capture is probably for the h3sprite.lod file).

If you want to see file extensions in Windows XP, click on the Tools menu and choose Folder Options. Then select the View tab and uncheck the option "Hide extensions for known file types" and click OK.

Anyway, you don't even need to worry about the Heroes3.snd file unless you want to extract the sound files for some reason (and if you do, you'll need a copy of Resedit or something similar to do that). If your only concern is to have no sound (and no delay), just create the empty sound files with the same names (in the Data folder).

An easy way is to copy Zquiet.wav 8 times (you already have that file in the Data folder) and rename it to the battle##.wav names.

I`d add my question here so that I wouldn`t make new topic unnecessary.
Does any one know how to do the same trick with that sound which is played when players switch in hotseat mode? Problem is that untill the sound is played you can`t start your turn, and you loose some time. It`s very annoying when you`re testing something and you need multiplayer to test it :/

Okay, this should have been obvious but it wasn't so it took me a little while of testing the sound files to figure out which one it was.

The sound played when hotseat players change is the same sound that's played at the start of a new week. The name of the sound file is newweek.wav. (And if you want to also remove the sound that plays at the start of each day, it's called newday.wav.)

Wow, thanks a lot Fnord. Are there any other .wav files that one could put into /data folder to change them? If so, then could you send me a list of them (you seem to know something about it)?

There's 1014 wav files in the game (in Heroes3.snd). I guess I could email you a list or you could run Resedit and extract them yourself. :)
