Also, have you noticed improved performance with the 3.1 patch?

I don't know, all map sizes are playable, even though I have some crappy specs...
No matter how powerful one becomes, there is always someone stronger. That's why I'm in a constant pursuit of power, so I can be prepared when an enemy tries to take advantage of me.

It really depends on how much elevation the map has. I play on max quality with a 2 year old video card and all maps run at good to decent frame rates. But if there's are huge mountains then it takes forever to load the map.

But if there are mountains chains, these tall trees or deserts on map, game slow downs.
