Caravan convert

Unread postby tumorbane » 20 Nov 2006, 17:21

As a Heros III purist with a disdain for all things H IV, I groaned when I heard caravans were being introduced into HoF. However, after playing with them for a few days I must admit changing my tune. They're a nice feature as they exist now.

I never got a chance to see the caravan in action, but I am sure that before long, I will definately see it.

It does work a bit differently,so it is semi-unique.

Besides the obvious differences(in HIV when your town was full/ocupird youd get those creatures appear in front of it,which isnt posible now),caravans are attackable now.

Caravan is well designed ... except that it works somehow stupidly when there are small pathes ...

Like on the 5th map of the Haven campaign with 2 castles on the other side of the river. The caravans have to pass a bridge and when a caravan ends its turn on a bridge, all other caravans on the wrong side of the bridge will turn back and move towards the second bridge and when both bridges are blocked, the caravans stop completely their movement instead of going as close as possible of where we want them to go :devious:

Even funnier ... is the AI blocking itself with its own caravans. An AI hero wants to go from A to B but a caravan is blocking the only way thus the hero doesn't move anymore ... the caravans is going from B to A but the hero is blocking the only path thus the caravan doesn't move anymore ... thus the AI doesn't do anything anymore ... :|

When the caravan is attacked, is sthere a battle with the monsters in it and no hero or is he just destroyed instantly or after his 'health' runs out (I mean is he like a unit in C&C for example?)
I think the first option would be extremly cool!!!!!!!

It's a bit late but still very good news. Now I hope they'll keep it in future games, and make it available from the beginning.

Could someone describe how it works exactly?

I like the attackable caravan approach. Now if we could just make caravans out of already hired troops...

GOW
Frodo: "I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened."
Gandalf: "So do all who live to see such times but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."

I'm still laughing about the group hug.

The way it works now is that in your castle you have the option of buying from other castles or buying from generators (ie. peasant huts, etc) in addition to buying from the buildings already in the castle. When you purchase the troops, they move in a caravan towards your castle and then when they arrive (I think they move as a hero with expert logistics), the troops appear in the castle if they all fit. They are attackable and if attacked they fight as a group of troops with no hero.

As far as I can tell, there is no way to direct your caravans towards your hero in the field nor is there a way to recruit troops from other castles that have already been purchased. I like it this way.
