Thanks!

I belive you have to make one yourself or that one of the patches creates one.

I've played 3 of the maps made for h5 available over on elrath (that guy needs to update the look and function of that site badly).

all of them need work, but the new master one is the only one that actually plays with terrain features, and contains some interesting scripted events (ambushes, events tied to map objects, etc), and will challenge your thinking ability as well as your strategic ability.

Elven lords was flat, and is basically a hero romp. not bad for a very first map attempt though.

I'd definetely recommend New Master to get at least some idea of what can be done with a map, and I bet it's still only scratching the surface.

maps that are .pak files work in the data directory, and .h5m maps (from the editor) work in the maps directory.

are you saying you can put .h5m maps in the data directory and they will work there too?

I just put the "Elven Lord" map in my data directory and clicked Custom Games and the map was not listed.

"Elven Lord" is a map in .h5m format (not .pak), it must be placed in folder named "Maps" in your Heroes V directory.

So create "Maps" folder and put there "Elven Lord.h5m" file. Path for this file on your computer should finally be:
F:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Heroes of Might and Magic V Collector Edition\Maps\Elven Lord.h5m
.

Why are they in .pak file and not in map dir.?

I would like to open them in the map editor and maybe work on a map using them as a guide.

Is there any way they can be edited?

Beacuse they are probably created by beta version of the editor.

So just rename xxxx.pak to xxxx.h5m. I've checked it once and it worked :)

If you want to edit official ingame maps... their h5m versions are here:

i believe some map creators also introduce modifications that they include with the maps, in which case they have to use pak files.

Posted here as it seems to be the right thread, hope one of you clever guys reads it :(

I downloaded "Two Coasts" (first downloaded map for H5), unzipped it, and transferred the map (.H5M) to a newly created maps folder. The maps folder is in the H5 main folder with all the others (data etc).

Fired up H5 and there it wasn't! Not in custom maps, not in multiplayer, nada.

It should have worked based on the above comments, or should I have some patches installed?

Apart from having to create a new maps folder I did the same as I always with many H3 maps, and they used to work fine.

I know I could download the patches, but am wary due to various negative comments here, and was going to wait until the expansion.

Suggestions?

Are you sure, the map folder is named "Maps" (not "maps" or something else)?

Thx Alavaris, but I already considered that. I originally named it "Maps", but when that didn't work, I closed H5, renamed the folder to "maps", reloaded H5 and still nothing. I noticed that all the other original folder names were lower case, so that's when I tried plan 2.

While waiting for an answer here I have been browsing the UBI site. There was a comment there about not unzipping .h5m maps, just putting them (still zipped) straight into the new maps folder. Could that be correct?

Thx so far...
