For online play to work they need to already have LAN code... and the battle reports are probably not done online either... so it takes more effort to remove LAN then have it, so no, it's not a pain at all.

I agree this is probably the case. They are intentionally removing LAN capability.

This is a far cry from the original Starcraft, where you could host a bunch of friends at a LAN party using one CD (via "Spawn" installs). Ahh, those were the days.

That was back before Blizzard was huge and they still called their demos "Shareware".
