Nice free games (ADOM, TR, SRO)

Unread postby zhuge » 05 Jul 2006, 13:42

For those who have already finished the H5 campaign, getting bored with no extra maps and no map editor to tinkle around with, here are some free games I've played, which IMHO are well worth the time invested:

ADOM - Free RPG, a Rogue-like game with basically very rudimentary graphics (just like Nethack) but deep gameplay and many customizing and levelling options for character. Takes elements from many games like d20, Diablo, Morrowind, etc...
http://www.adom.de/

The Reincarnation - Free multiplayer "turn-based" strategy game. It was called ArchMage in the past and was developed by the company MARI. Then MARI went bankrupt and some fans took in on themselves to resurrect the title from scratch, building a relatively accurate rendition of the original game with many improvements. Active admins which constantly monitor for cheaters.
In many ways, it borrows from elements of Magic the Gathering and also Heroes of Might and Magic. Certainly an intriguing game.

Silkroad Online - Free MMORPG. Nice graphics. Set in ancient China, you get to play the role of a Trader/Thief/Hunter once you get to L20. Lots of items and interesting skill based levelling system.

GalaxyMage

for those liking wesnoth, theres a 3d Wesnoth-inspired freeware game being made (right now its version 0,3 and it really is quite cumbersome), i have the feeling it might evolve into a great game one day.

I would like to add The Ur-Quan Masters (http://sc2.sourceforge.net/) to the list, a Star Control 2 port. The latest version allows you to play on-line SuperMelee! vs your friends, which is a ton of fun!

That's pretty good beating it again from memory...there's a lot of locations and quests to remember! (Not to mention you have to be pretty good at fighting too!) Star Control 2 is actually my all time favorite game, followed closely by HoMM 2.

I'll have to give this Wesnoth a try sometime. I've heard very good things about it.

Highly recommend it Angeleyes .... played it for maybe 3 or 4 hours yesterday and will do the same today

as for the Ur-Quan Masters, once I remembered which of the centauri's had all the good pink minerals (the most expensive ones) that set me up nicely, then it was just getting my allies right and hitting some biological .... then my main ship was a powerhouse

as an aside my first effort at hacking was for this game, changed the hex value for the Yehat ships battery recharge to 255 .... permanent shields and firing at the same time! just watch out for the planets :)
