i just got "the temple of elemental evil"by greyhawk as a present
its a d and d but i've never seen a game that u have to pay to use ur spells,
does greyhawk aqlwys have that cr====y thing in his games, i thought the whole purpose of getting identify was so u didn't have to pay

Troika tried to implement 3.5e rules as closely as they could.

Taken from 3.5e rules (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/srd35):
Arcane Material Component: A pearl of at least 100 gp value, crushed and stirred into wine with an owl feather; the infusion must be drunk prior to spellcasting.

The gold cost used in Identify is representative of having to pay for a pearl to be used in spellcasting.

ToEE is a pretty hardcore game when it comes to 3.5e DnD rules though ths story is pretty meagre. If you don't like the way the game is handled, you can find various mods at the Circle of Eight modding forum (http://www.co8.org/forum/)

Material components are a nice addition to some spells.Although they should charge identify a bit more than what you have to pay when you do it yourself.
