About an hour ago WotC have announced beginning of the new edition. They will (or so they claim) take peoples' opinions into consideration and it will start this spring.

And they had to come with it when I was considering starting with DnD. Damn...

I played the 2nd edition briefly, back when it was called "Advanced". I'm old.
I'm on Steam and Xbox Live.

Don't worry, at this point 6th Edition is only 2-3 years away...

And last i heard the Essential book where pretty much D&D 4.9...

I'm not going to get the newest edition there is, just for the sake of having it, but I've got a group of bordgamers whom I want to introduce to RPGs. And since one of the complaints about 4th edition was its inclination to board games, this edition looks like an ideal candidate for my group.

Guess I'll wait for more info about 5th edition to decide which one to pick up.

Well you'll have to wait quite a while... right now they're just announcing what looks like a giant open beta test for the new edition...

If they're smart they'll have it in public testing for a few years... and thus avoid the fate of 4th Ed.

Just wondering, why they make new versions so fast now ?

I mean it seems just like 2nd edition was very looong lasting, then 3rd edition came for quite some years, then suddenly it's the 4th, and now the ...5th ? and 6th ? Everything is so fast today ?

DND is owned by Wizards of the coast now, rather than TSR which made AD&D(second edition)
Generally it is pretty mainstream and cash oriented(wont say their products are bad though) company so there is your answer.
D&D E3 was replaced by 3.5 and so on...

Well money and the fact that 4th Ed. didn't pan out very well... i mean if it had they wouldn't have tried changing it mid-way through with the Essentials stuff.
