Homm4 Help with 1280x1024 resolution in windowed mode?

Unread postby Khalbrae » 28 Apr 2015, 02:08

Long story short, I am Khalbrae.

I am Shyranis' husband and I'm trying to rebuild the old town theme videos that were lost when people falsely accused her videos of being inappropriate.

Of course, I want to produce these videos higher quality than ever.

That's why I have to ask for help. Heroes 4 seems to only allow you to do 1024x768 as windowed mode.

Does the Equilibris mod allow you to do 1280x1024 windowed?

Originally I had captured the video from 1024x768 and upscales to 1280 but I refuse to give you guys less than the best this time around. (And capturing small chunks of a window in a program that only runs in 16 bit windowed is very annoying on a modern OS. But worth it for you guys.)

Look forward to your responses.[/url]

I know you can do that in Linux, by using Wine with emulated desktop enabled.

So, did you get it to work? I recently reinstalled the game here to refresh my memory, and if you want I could try and record the videos for you.

I haven't tried yet because I have had heroes 3 and V to keep me busy.

I haven't tried Equilibria yet. I also only run windows, not Lin/wine... I wouldn't mind d swapping HD footage around :)

BTW, I found out that for the HD edition of Heroes 3 all of the old fmvs were just recoded at original resolution. So they are lower quality than they originally were due to extra compression artifacts.

I will have to use my original h3 videos to complete the soundtrack it seems.

See if this works: http://www.mediafire.com/watch/y5yc5g12 ... /homm4.mkv
It's in YUV444p which is highest quality, but I'm not certain if YouTube and video editors actually work right with it. Hmm. Also, due to the weird resolution, you might need to upscale it a bit so YouTube recognises it as 1080p (I don't remember if that's still needed or not; you can test it by uploading normally and seeing if the 1080p option becomes available or not).

I decided to test the 1080p thing myself, as well as recording in 60 FPS and ways to extend the music:

Looks like my PC is not strong enough to record at 60 FPS without hardware acceleration, hmm. Though I'm pretty sure the game itself is 30 FPS, so not much loss there. But I might try and play with other recording methods.

Come to think of this, I should have posted this thread in the Equilibris section of the forum. Could a helpful mod move this for me?

I actually plan to capture a lot more than just the town themes.

So, again, what do you want recorded? I can record it for you. It's not an issue that I can't record in 60 FPS because the game itself is not 60 FPS.

We did not change this behavior from vanilla. But I don't see the problem - you start Heroes, it goes full screen mode (changing your system resolution if necessary), you hit "record" hotkey and it records everything in 1280*1024. It does not care if you monitor supports fullHD or any other resolution - it works with video output, which is 1280*1024.

does it force it to 1024x768 when you set it to windowed mode? I'd love if it kept its resolution.

On Windows, the available fullscreen resolutions are dependent on your video card drivers. (Unlike on Linux, where the fullscreen resolution can be whatever you wish it to be.)

I tested it - it did force fullscreen setting with 1280*1024 in my case. It forced 1024*768 when selecting windowed mode. But it does not matter for the goal of recording video.

You said that you tried to go windowed mode with 1280*1024, but you failed, and game ran in fullscreen mode. In fullscreen mode game changes system resolution settings to settings selected in options, in this case - 1280*1024. Any video you capture will have exactly the same resolution, regardless of your physical screen resolution.

After you exit the game, your system should reset automatically to your native settings (full HD, probably), and when you run your recorded video - it will be in 1280*1024 window at 100% scale.

I wanted it to run in windowed mode to be able to record video. I can't really find any tools that work properly for me to record in fullscreen.

For the animated town screens I edited for Shyranis' old account I recorded using 1024x768 and stretched them to 1280... I'd prefer to have them native if possible.

Try Bandicam, I was very pleased with result.

Hmm, thanks.

I've had a hard time with Fraps in these older heroes games (hence resorting to capturing sections of the screen in windowed mode). Also I didn't like the quality of the output with the free AMD capture program. I'll have to test this out.

Thanks!
