Your Might... Our Magic

Unread postby Angelspit » 18 Jan 2008, 15:15

A classic ad from Issue 44 of Computer Gaming World, back in February 1988. I wonder what would happen if we asked about Might and Magic at our local dealer, as the ad suggests.

More gems can be found at the CGW Museum.

Hummmm... I never played Might and Magic, just HOMM. This ad makes me wonder what I was missing!

LOL. Great ad. Heck, I still even have my copy in the 5 1/4" floppy discs. Of course I have nothing to play it on. :O) I'm not even sure that today's gamers would even recognize one of those old floppy's if they saw them. *grin*

And make fun of it all you want...this was cutting edge stuff back then. Not to mention...fun as h*ll!

Those graphics look better than the version I've got. It's got more colours.

Dang! For the Commodore 64? :loll:

My dad got one of those when I was 3...I didn't even know how to use it. :baby:

Not to mention, the article was written up the month of my birth. :D

@Angelspit: You should repost this ten years from now...just to see how many young'uns fail to recognize the 5 1/4" floppy disks. :devious:

(Heck, the format died out when I was 6, IIRC. I still remember deleting the config.sys file on my dad's computer...:devious:)

Ok...enough ranting for now. ;)

I think that's already a brainbraker question for the younglings.

Hopefully the Startup disk was in a safeplace...

Anyway I would try this game, just to see the begining...
Any idea how can one get something like this?

Do you recognize 8" floppy? I found such from wikipedia along with other pretty unknown floppy formats.

Only 5 1/4 floppy I have left is (original) Test Drive 2 which I got from my father. No drive to play it though, but at least the packaging is nice.

Actually, you can usually still find copies of the Limited Edition of Might and Magic 6 (Mandate of Heaven) out there on the bargain bin shelves. That version has ALL the previous M&M games included on it. They're designed for Win95 use (although they need a bit of tweaking to play correctly) but they do work on XP as well.

@ Humakt

Actually, I remember the original huge tape drives. My father worked for the US government (defense dept) for years and he was one of the leads on the team that worked on the second computer ever (after the Eniac (sp?)). I recall going to work with him and walking into this huge room that was loud as h*ll (not to mention hot as the sun) and all it contained were machines of tape-drives. That whole room held as much data as a digital watch does today. :O) He even showed me the inside of them and seeing all those vacuum tubes looked totally sci-fi at the time. *grin*

Indeed it is...but as time passes, the older disk formats are going to fall deeper and deeper into the dark recesses of history.

I say 10 years, because by then 9 year-olds will be 19 (my age) and I can almost guarantee that no one right now under about 13 knows what a 5 1/4" floppy is (those things were really floppy :)).
Hopefully the Startup disk was in a safeplace...
It was, but you can imagine my dad's reaction (let's say it wasn't very pretty :)).

Suckers... i've actually seen punch cards... it's nice living in a place where upgrading only happens when something is kaput... to "save" money that you won't get to keep if you don't spend it in time anyhow.

Punch cards were a way to enter data (or save it) before there were magnetic tapes/discs. Here's a decent example of one....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Punch-card-5081.jpg
