The problem comes as you can surround the stack with low number stacks, and make the attacker have to kill them all to get to the stack behind them. A 4x4 stack would have big problems getting to a 2x2 one. The enemy can even move another stack in position after you killed the first four.

Depends on the BF and its rules.But in HIV it was quite a valid tactics to use zoc to prevent your enemy fro reaching your archers.Imo,its a good way of covering your troops.With stacks growing with their size,it would be even better.BUt then the BF tiles should be very small to balnce properly.

In H4 the size difference wasn't so big.

Yes it was.The megadragon was as big as at least four pixies.But thats beside the point.In my first post on this topic I did say if we had a BF similar to HIV,but bigger,this might work.

4x4 units isn't 4 times 1 unit. And the MD didn't have a square shape.

The BF size has nothing to do with what i said. Creature size does. But i guess it could be balanced in some way, it just might take too much effort.
