It's an AI.
It's game mechanism when you have very low Prestige points (<2100 pts). IIRC you can't be attacked by other players below 2000 points (as they don't see you), and you have an opportunity to attack this Adventurer, to easy earn some Prestige points and get back to PvP battles with other players.

To be honest I consider it to being prestige points "pillow" too. But never seen official confirmation.
