Naga Drama Queens

Unread postby Kalah » 01 Apr 2011, 22:41

"Nice piece of tail - who does your hair?"

"Persevs the Persian."

"Oooh, I just lovehim, don't you?"

"Yes, but his assistant just ruined my nails."

"Turn her into stone."

"I did. She's being used as a front lawn ornament."

"Does a Medusa by any other name not have hair as bite-happy as ever?"

The units are looking pretty ghastly up close.

3D always looked bad in still shots...

And anything that's not a FPS will have jaggies if you zoom in enough because there's little point in wasting time to make the models look smoother when no one will be seeing them so close in the first place...

But if you look at the april fools funny animation video you'll see that they do look better in motion (AA FTW).

Aren't sprites 2D? Are you referring to 2.5D or something (which don't count any more then CGI - btw, did you see the unreal engine tech demo that looks like CGI but they say it's real time on 3 connected video cards?)?

No, sprites since MM6 are still shots of 3D models. Earlier they were drawings, in which case yes, those were 2D, but no longer since MM6.

Yeap, I did see it. The guy's face is still an uncanny valley, but the reflections are neat.

But Medusa is Naga - in same way as Kirin is (Chinise) Dragon for us. Different cultures see creatures from other mythology in other ways.
For us, Western People, Medusa is Medusa - snake-head creature of it own.
For others cultures it can be just another Naga.
Here you have Naga Queen from game produced by Eastern Company. Look familiar?
And Medusa herself is in this game too - but she is just envoy of Naga.

And btw - Medusa from HoMM3 and MM7 is based on Medusa from Clash of the Titans movie, not on what she was really described in Greek mythology (where are her wings and from where she got her bow?), so she also wasn't "true" Medusa (or rather true Gorgon).

What happens if two Medusas stare at each other?
"I did put the fires out."
"You made them worse!"
"Worse?!... Or better?"

I for one wouldn't take any creature in a game as an accurate depiction of what a creature should be.

Snakes for hair was never a feature of the Naga IRL. Of course neither where multiple arms from what i can tell...

Actually the wings weren't always present on Medusa in greek myth, and as i recall when they where it was always as a feature of the Gorgons overall, not just her.

But yeah, Clash is the primary inspiration for modern depictions.

Of course, it's just an example how different creatures can be described by different people.

Different Greek polis had different version of same myth - so no wonder that Medusa one look that and another time in other way.
Same with Cerberus - dog with 1, 2, 3 or even 100 heads.
