Heroes VI Logos

Unread postby Kalah » 26 Aug 2010, 22:10

Haven, Necropolis and Inferno logos; the first being typically cross-like, and the middle one sporting the fancy spider often seen in Heroes V. The Inferno wyrm reminds me of the Norse midgard legends.

And it's a bit stupid of them to keep it. Ouroboros is a symbol for continuity of life, as I already pointed out during the H5 development. But I guess we live in a too superficial world for them to care what their unoriginal symbols actually meant for those who created them in the first place.

True. You'd think someone would remember that the Swastika is in fact a lucky charm, too ;|

In The Worm Ouroboros, by E. R. Eddison, it stood for eternal life, but the immortal characters were all either evil or punished by the gods with immortality.

In Norse mythology, the Midgard wyrm simply marked the ends of the world of men (Midgard), by encircling it. It may be considered a symbol of the definite boundaries of the world, but the wyrm is also a terrifying creature destined to take part in Ragnarok (the end of the world).

But Jörmungandr isn't Ouroboros.

As for the Swastika, it's still an important symbol in many Eastern religions. People aren't just going to throw away a 7,000 year old symbol of life, predating the ancient Egyptian ankh, just because someone tried to subvert its meaning.

I was just saying the symbols are similar.

Also, who says the symbol is Ourboros? it takes place on a different world, and Nival may have written their own myth to explain it.

Because it is and coming up with imaginary explanations for it in-game-world doesn't change that.

And Kalah, Jormungandr just circles the world because he's so big... it's not really about recurrence.

Yes, but it also symbolizes the end of the world. You know, the "here, there be monsters" thing. "Don't go to the end of the world, or the wyrm will eat you and your ship." It is also a measure of the strength of the god Thor, seeing as he is said to eventually kill it.

Actually, they did specifically say that it's Ouroboros and not Jörmungandr or Quetzalcoatl or Apophis or Shesha or AURYN.

They did? I must have missed that. Source me.

Still, it's a general symbol, as you clearly know, popping up in various forms throughout history, symbolizing different things depending on the culture.
