JVC Working on a Fantasy MMO

Unread postby Angelspit » 03 Jun 2008, 14:07

Jon Van Caneghem's new company, Trion, has revealed their new project and announced a partnership with the Sci-Fi Channel. The first game will be a fantasy massively multiplayer online game. Trio CEO Lars Buttler told Shacknews the following:

"Trion's San Diego studio and our platform and publishing groups in Austin and Redwood City will work closely with Sci Fi's creative team in developing a dynamically evolving, massively social, connected entertainment franchise across multiple formats and platforms of choice. We are laying the foundation for an exciting new co-development model between top cable entertainment and lifestyle brands such as Sci-Fi and connected game and interactive entertainment companies such as Trion."

Buttler made the headlines last year when he said that "the days of the console are numbered," and "one more generation of gaming consoles and that is it." For more information about the project, check out this interview at Gamasutra with Lars Buttler and Jon Van Caneghem.

MMO? Not the best timing with WoW and Blizzard having another MMO in the pipeline.

Good luck to him though.

I'm looking forward to it, even though I'm judging a book by its cover and I'm not really a huge fan of MMORPGs.
And there was much rejoicing...

Do you really believe that there will be any original games in the next hundred years? I don't care if a game is unoriginal, if it's good.

"On the flipside, If this game makes enough money, maybe JVC can buy back the franchises he started. Then we can have a true M&M sequel."

Sweet dreams. I don't belive Ubi will ever sell the rights.

Well, there is gonna be some sci-fi in it. Sounds really nice, and it's well thought of. Only question is if they really can accomplish what they want to do...

True, originality is immaterial if the game is good, but how likely are any of these new "fantasy" MMORPGs to be good? They're just clones of other games. I expect Warhammer will be good, and that AoC is good. Guild Wars is too. WoW strikes me as at best mediocre. I wonder if these MMORPGs will even succeed...

One game which has got me excited - though I dunno if you could strictly call it an MMORPG - is Project Offset.

Of course not! I mean, did you really think anything of worth would have been invented since 1899? That's when Charles H. Duell, the head of the patent office, tried to shut it down because "Everything that can be invented has been invented."

Anyway, I daresay Spore will be pretty original...

@deadguy118:

Even if the game menages to make a good deal of sales (a chance for that right now is 10% and the number is falling) I doubt JVC would get enough money to buy it from Ubisoft (who won't sell it for less then they bought and judging by competition they gave a lot of money), not to mention that JVC might not be interested into M&M any longer.

Truly original: first you play pac-man, then sims, populous, civilization (light) and master of orion. It's just a mix of good games, but nothing really originial.:)

Setting = old M&M universe?
Make you strong places to dwell and practice the evil of your arts. Build great monuments to stand through the ages and remind your followers of the task with which you have been charged. Use these halls of iniquity to perpetrate your schemes against the infestation that has taken the fields and lakes of this land from you, their rightful masters. Never forget the hatred that must finally overcome and consume mankind. Dwell in your dungeons and brood. - Sheltem the Dark
