New Map: Asiatic Empires

Unread postby Angelspit » 30 Jan 2008, 14:59

<img src="/https://www.celestialheavens.com/images ... mpires.jpg" align=right vspace=10 hspace=10>I have completed my "Empires" map series with the submission of <b><a href="/https://www.celestialheavens.com/downlo ... 7">Asiatic Empires</a></b>. Along with the use of the H4 Utility by Slava Salnikov, and the help of Koni, Muszka and Humakt, who helped with map improvements, these 4 extra large HoMM4 maps are not only breathtaking but educational as well. 8 real regions of Europe, Asia and North America, covering over 25 countries and over 100 cities are represented here. Depending on which map you play, and what empire you choose, you are given accurate historical events of that particular empire. Historical accounts of each town on each map, is also included and can be read on the signposts located near each town.

<i>"You begin with <a href="/https://www.celestialheavens.com/search ... h">Ancient Empires</a>, and the dawning of Democracy. Greece and Italy are the prominant Empires here, and their depiction of how they changed the world forever. Followed by <a href="/https://www.celestialheavens.com/search ... ">Atlantic Empires</a>, where Spain and England compete for the rights of open sea lanes to the New World, which eventually leads to the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Next, with <a href="/https://www.celestialheavens.com/search ... ch">Arctic Empires</a>, you will learn about the Vikings' dominance over Northern Europe and the exploration and exploitation of the last frontier: Alaska. Finally, you are subjected to the harsh settlement of the Kamchatka peninsula and the violent dynasties of Korea."</i>

These maps can be played in any order you wish. Both Standard and WoW versions are included in the downloads. I wanted to make something different from a regular storytelling pespective. And I wanted to make something that caught your attention. This seemed like the perfect project for both. As the project progressed, feedback from the contributing team members made the series even more interesting than I had originally intended. It's like the maps began to take a life of their own. Each map has its own distinct personality and signature. This was perhaps my most challenging map project since <a href="/https://www.celestialheavens.com/search ... h">Painted: The Misfit</a> for WoG. My thanks go out to those involved with this series. We hope you enjoy it.

In ancient time Italy was only the name of the land. Correct name would be Roman Empire.

Same for Greece. It was called Hellas, and it was a bunch of city states, sometimes fighting against each other.

This reminds me, how I was crying from laughning, when I saw 300! They were speaking about Greece there too... And what they made with poor Xerxes, and the Persans... One of the most ridiculous movies I ever saw. After Troy... F*cking history and mithology in the ass without vaseline is so fashionable these days.

Next week I will take a look on Beowulf. I already have a bad feeling about it.

Back then Italia wasn't even the whole peninsula... but Greece is still called Ellada nowadays, with the romans calling it Graecia even back then... so using "Greece" when you're supposedly translating what they say to english for ease ain't wrong.

I'm pretty sure Ellada is in greek... (and i'm assuming it's an ancient name as that's what they kept using in my translated Myths of Olympus books... with maybe a different spelling)

Alaska and Kamchatka were never Empires either. But their histories are tied together by the comings and goings of one of historys most forgotten explorers: Vitus Bering.
I read the book "Alaska" by James Michener which explained in detail the beginning and ending of the exploration of that area. What Bering went through is stuff of movies. Not many other well known explorers of that time could've endured what he went through.

@ThunderTitan: I thougt that so too. I was speaking about the name Graecia, which the roman used. Well, I'm just a computer engineering student, so I won't argue too much about lingustics.:)

For those of you who downloaded Ancient Empires and Arctic Empires a while back, AS, by my request, was kind enough to add the WoW versions to the respected downloads now. We added the WoW versions because of the demand for them. They should be even more challenging than just the standard versions. The WoW versions are the scripted versions with the script written by Humakt.
I wanted both Standard and WoW versions of these maps for those who did'nt have WoW. That way, everyone has the chance to play these maps.

I'm intrigued; will definitely tackle the maps in the near/far future. Thanks BB!

P.S.: I wonder whether all of the cities in the Balkans are going to be Infernopolises? :D

I think it's great that ByteBandit put a new twist on H4 and applaud him for making the effort. So it's not 100% correct in every sense of history, it's a bunch of fun looking maps. I too may have to locate my H4 disc and give them a whirl.

Even historians aren't 100% correct in every sense of history.

We tried to be as accurate as possible for each region represented. We even went beyond Wikipedia and gathered the events from the regions themselves. So, the information you read, more or less, is from the represented countries and regions. None of the events were made up by any of us, so what you read really happened. Be it in the events or on the signposts.

I was basically after 2 things here while making these maps. One, to explore the boundaries of the H4 Utility and what it could do. Secondly, bring H4 back to life somehow, in my own small way. And this was the result of that.

It's just an ingenious idea, to make these AE-series with both geografical and historical aspects, and giving the chance, to connect playing our beloved heroes and studying history at the same time. :-D Thanks, ByteBandit!!!
