Tribes Review at YouGamers

Unread postby Angelspit » 15 Nov 2007, 17:34

YouGamers has a detailed <a href="/http://www.yougamers.com/reviews/14186_ ... t/">review of the Tribes of the East expansion</a>, written by someone who seems familiar with the series. The author describes the new features introduced by the game, lists some of the surprises that can be found in the campaign scenarios, talks about the Orcs and their blood rage... and blames the game for being resource-hungry:

<i>"One of these is the fact that even on higher end dual core systems with 2 GB RAM and a top end graphics card, the performance can get painfully bad after several hours of gaming. Especially lengthy battles seem to have a huge impact on performance, so it seems to be a question of bad memory management (throwing more RAM into your setup may help for a while, but ultimately it will only delay the slowdowns and the time to when you'll have to quit and restart the game)."</i>

Tribes of the East gets a 75% grade, with praises for the gameplay ("one of the best versions in terms of gameplay mechanics and the amount of tactics the players can use") and the art design, and complaints for the cutscenes and game engine.

Well, i'm playin' Tribes with a dualcore AMD CPU (4200Mhz), 1024Mbytes of RAM, and a GeForce FX8600GT (256 megs of RAM). The game runs smoothly on the highest setting, and I never experienced any slowdons after many hours (and reloads:)).

But all in all, I'm happy to see such a nice review after all the sh*t I read before. Thanks, Andreas!

It's a good review but again too much emphasis on campaigns.

It's a a nice review...pretty fair. Still no mention of the map editor. I guess that sort of thing isn't reviewer territory.

For the game runs ok...but not fantastic.

@Ravenheart: what about on impossible map size? What about on random maps?

Hmm... Your right, never tried impossible maps... I don't have too much time to play nowdays, only at weekends. Altough I'll need to study C this weekend, I'll try those nasty big maps.:)

I saw that one and pretty much agree with what the author had to say.
I, for one, am dying to find out what colour they paint Michael's toenails.

Too much emphasis on campaigns? As long as a patch doesn't include a true simultaneous gameplay in multiplayer, the game won't be running smooth or fast or whatever you want to call it. The only thing to be rated then is the campaign/ single player mode 'cause the multiplayer sucks.

What does 'true' simultaneous mean?

Simultaneous turns are for wussies. Real men play it PBEM.

In the case people don't realize it by themselves; I'm not serious about that statement.

Not Real Time ... Real Time is like Command & Conquer. "True simultaneous" points towards the ability to move simultaneous turn based even if players interfere with each other (now all players switch back to pure turn based gameplay as soon as one can reach the other player - and that sucks. Age of Wonders Shadow Magic did it right).

Hmm... If I've said 'piece of art' to the 1UP review (even if it was a comparsion) that, I'm in problem with this one.
I think this is a Review, harsh if needed, understanding with fans, explanatory.
But as PhoenixReborn pointed, mapeditor section missing.
Nothing is perfect... Ehh.
