Tribes Review at Games Radar

Unread postby Angelspit » 26 Oct 2007, 14:58

The Games Radar review of Tribes of the East reads like a summary of the IGN review published last week. Again we are told how unfortunate it is that we only get to play the Stronghold campaign late in the game (what if The Two Towers movie began right in the middle of the Helm's Deep siege?). The game gets a 7 out of 10, the official score of the typical neutral review (but I admit I did it as well before).

I really didn't want to whine about reviews for a while, but that article makes me wonder how much the author got paid for the 509 words he wrote...

Well it's not because german reviews gave ToE a mark above 8/10 that it makes them better :p

But this review is really ... uhm ... poor ... Even though, I kinda agree with his last sentence. Nival did exactly the same mistake with the Orc in ToE that they did with the dwarves in HoF.

@nevermindspy: The readme says "Multiplayer, Singleplayer", so as long as it can be used for MP, I specify it in the database.

they gave me a ticked... they'll be the first to die. Also, they need to stop peeing all over the banks of the Seine, it completely ruins the mood.

The reviewer says there is no tutorial for the map editor and that's why you should hate it. However, there are several manuals in .pdf format.

You exactly pinpoint at one thing: he wrote those 509 words because he got paid, or he will. I don't think he liked the game, he just done his job.

Deep sigh... well, it's a shame really, these reviews. They make my heart heavy, but I do not give up hope. The truth shall win out. You'll see.

You'll hate:
Takes a while to get to the Orcs
Story is disjointed
No tutorial for map/scenario editor
Last point is invalid. Others have too much emphasis on campaign and the points are rather weak anyway. (Features (Units, towns, spells), Combat, RMG, Map Editor, Game mechanisms, Multiplayer and Hotseat, interface, graphics, sounds and music) are all much more important sections of the game. If the bad score is because of those points then the review is weak. YES, 7 is bad score because no one in their right mind want an AVERAGE game.

H2-H4 would have been rather crappy if it had just been the campaigns. Why do people give them so much weight anyway? W2 Deluxe had NO campaigns and I adored that game.

But speaking of campaigns what I would really want to see is more of strategical military style campaign in the style of Warlords Battlecry II.

H2-H4 campaigns were crappy? I don't think so. I really like the Price of Loyality, most of AB, and SoD is great. H4 vanilla is good too, especially liked Tarnum and Waerjak (I don't remember the correct spelling of the name), and I like the GS's end. One may say that WW is repetitive, but I found it fascinating.

At least for me the campaing were satisfing more than enough.

How about the reviews, there can be no review what could darken H5 for me.

I think that the reviewer is certainly entitled to his opinion and really most of what he says is probably the view shared by the majority of game players, even if I don't agree with any of it.

My problem with the review is how poorly written it is! Why would anyone want to waste their time reading this bit of dibble. People don't like Ebert because they don't agree with his taste, however, Ebert is successful because his reviews, whatever you make of his taste, are incredibly engaging. There's no action to this review, it could as easily have been written by an elementary schooler as a professional.

In Response to Humakt:

I like the Heroes campaigns a lot. In fact although I suppose most of my time with Heroes II was spent with fan maps, that's probably not the case with later games in the series. I don't know what's to complain about with the campaigns really. Especially, I had a new appreciation for their plots after the Heroes Chronicles really tied them and the Might and Magic games together for me, by bringing in the ancients and Vorr and providing a much more satisfying link between Armageddon's Blade and IV.

In fact the only way I can fault the Heroes campaigns is the way in which the stories progress based on how many days you've been playing as opposed to where you've explored. This causes you to miss a lot of messages from winning the scenario before they're through, and some of the time makes them not make a lot of sense since they'll mention all the trouble you've been having with the necromancers (for instance) and you maybe haven't even met a necromancer yet.

Second archcorenth on the campaigns. The only reason I play Heroes is for the campaigns. I don't think I've played more than a dozen or so single scenario maps since I played Heroes I.

Muszka @ ThunderTitan: down with the French.
Is it because of the French, that some ppl don't like Ubi, or is it because of Ubi, that some ppl here don't like the French? :p
