Tribes Preview at GameDaily

Unread postby Angelspit » 29 Jun 2007, 12:42

<img src="/https://www.celestialheavens.com/homm5/ ... quasit.png" align=right vspace=10 hspace=10>On <a href="/http://www.gamedaily.com/heroes-of-migh ... meDaily</a> you can find the first of what is probably going to be a series of previews about the Tribes of the East expansion this Summer. The author explains to a general audience what the new features of the game are, without going into the details -- therefore, anyone who kept an eye on this page won't learn anything. Unless you didn't know that Tribes will be a standalone game:

<i>"Many expansion packs to strategy games end up so large they could be considered entire games, and Tribes of the East looks like it fits that bill. Ubisoft and developer Nival must have realized this, as they decided to make the game a special form of expansion in the vein of Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. Tribes of the East will be both a stand-alone game which can be purchased and played by itself, or an expansion to an existing installation of Heroes V. This gives newcomers a chance to get a feel for the game and its new additions before deciding to purchase the entire Heroes V chronicle."</i>

Of course, the Shadow of Death was packaged this way as well, back in 2000.

I'm sorry, but what is the point of buying the last expansion to get a feel for the game? It has all the features. If I got ToE first, I wouldn't spend $50+ for the campaigns!

The drawback of regular expansion packs is that only people who own the basic game will buy them. Publishers solved this by making some of their expansions standalone and hope the first-time buyer will want to complete his or her collection. Is that wishful thinking or a bold business move? I don't know.

Why not? The company loses nothing by doing it. The original game by the point a second expansion comes out is usually highly discounted, so they're not losing revenue there. People who have already the original game lose nothing because the expansion is priced as an expansion - plus they now have a copy of the full game that already has all the patches included presumably. It's a pretty sound business move to capture more customers, and it benefits just about everyone involved as long as it is priced as a regular expansion pack.

So they took out the cd-check, right?

In this particular case my understanding is that it will cost more than HoF but less than the original. It does have more content than HoF.

Whatever, I just hope its good. The apparent 'large size' of Tribes better be from actual content and NOT campaigns.

Good business unless people just start waiting for the last expansion and not buy the original. This could lead to the series being killed, as too many are now waiting.

For my dollar, the most important fact in that article was the mention of an Academy campaign. Seeing as how the Academy campaign from the original h5 game was anything BUT an Academy campaign, I'm really looking forward to it. Maybe I'll actually be able to have an Academy TOWN in this campaign (for more than just ONE map). :O)

Nothing if you are the purchaser, from the company's standpoint they may cause some smart shoppers to wait until then and cause a slight loss of initial sales, which may be more profitable.

Humm, humm. According to GameDaily there will be a Sovereign/haven campaign, an orc campaign and an academy one. Thought there would be campaigns for the orcs (a tutorial, 500y prelude) and a later orc campaign, a necropolis campaign and an academy campaign??

The prelude could be a single scenario or the first orc mission - or a tutorial as the one with Lord Haart in H3 but I don't believe that. As for inferno it would be interesting to play the sovereign but will he share the necro campaign or there won't be a necro campaign?

I, for one, am dying to find out what colour they paint Michael's toenails.

There's supposed to be a necro campaign.

There will be a Beastion, Academy and an Necropolis campaign.

If there were a lizardmen expansion, there would have been the Lizardmen, Wood Elves and Inferno.

The latter. If the expansion is good it will entice consumers to try out the original game and former expansions.

Or even better, some people might buy it without having the previous H5's...

Which seems a more likely case.

significantly more likely, a better business plan is to have a great game first up that isn't broke, get good reviews, lot's of great word of mouth and then you have repeat buyers, and they get the exp's as well, but that's just my idea
