Open Beta Delayed

Unread postby Vision » 19 Jan 2006, 15:14

As I posted in the comments to this morning's post, the Open Beta for Heroes of Might and Magic 5 has been delayed.

While there is no official statement on how long this delay will be, a translation of that statement, originally found on the French Ubisoft Might and Magic site was posted in the comments for this mornings post, and the translation (from Babelfish) follows:

It was decided to defer the launching ofopen beta planned for Heroes of Might and Magic V. An official statement on the effective date of launching of this beta will be carried out later on.

It was noted that beta could not have provided you a satisfactory vision of the play and, in order to provide you a product of better quality, it was thus decided to defer launching. All the team works now to finish as soon as possible with best possible quality the last adjustments on this open beta.

We excuse ourselves for all the hopes born today and which cannot be satisfied. We hope that you will understand that it is for better satisfying you than we had to make this decision.

Still all our excuses.

I think this is a good move on Ubisoft's part. Betatesters are not paid for their work, so you need a halfway-decent product to get the most effort out of them. A really buggy game is not fun. And if it's not fun then a lot of people won't be willing to test it thoroughly.

Yet, how hard would have it been not to mention any specific date? "The open beta will start soon or in a week or two" would have made people as happy. Instead, we now have dozens of annoyed fans who just spent the whole day hitting Refresh on the official forums/web site.

But a delay was probably the right decision. Let's hope they will be as careful with the final game.
I'm on Steam and Xbox Live.

Hindsight is always 20/20. Having posted a specific date was a bad decision, and that is now evident. However, if they had pulled it off for today, it would have been the "best thing ever".

Angelspit: yup, the open beta announcement hits 45 pages in several hours. My... and people posting there are registered on 16, 17, and 18 January, has less than 10 posts kinda annoying for me. Glad that the open beta is delayed for both the annoying fans trying to enter beta and spamming one topic and that Ubi-Nival prepares the game seriously.

I agree, to a point.

Registering on the 16, 17, or 18 of January is not a big deal, as I did that with WoW... mainly because I didnt know about it until then.

But the spamming, THAT annoys me.

I fully support delays about Heroes V. A better product can't hurt.

Angelspit: Those people are a little sad actually :p

p.s. You're danish? =)

Within a reasonable limit, every delay is a victory for us fans and the other nerds actually making the game. I say let us celebrate this glorious delay for it makes the game a little better.

I just hope that making of this "better quality product" will not delay the game release date...

... it would be a major downer if the delay of the beta means that the game

will be delayed as well....

When do you think the game is going to be released? The ONLY thing that has been said about release of H5 has been "Spring 2006", which is anything from mid march to mid june

Have we started counting how many times Fabrice has said "late" this year yet? :)
