Performance Tweaking Utility

Unread postby Angelspit » 09 Apr 2007, 13:20

Official forum member smith-b-d has written some great guidelines for version 2 of the unofficial tweaking utility for Heroes of Might and Magic V, created by cjd. This tool has been online for a while already, and has helped many people get a better performance in the game and to reduce the computer turns. In smith's post you will find a short description of what some of the more obsure graphic settings do and suggested values for these settings. The tool can be downloaded from <a href="/http://www.maps4heroes.com/heroes5/file ... oes.com.

Are you a current user of that program? Please provide some feedback for the other community members.

I'll give it a shot. Heroes runs pretty slow for my computer which can run games that are much more demanding. Of course I do max it all out but seriously, it shouldn't drop FPS to a crawl when my matriarch starts casting a spell or shooting.

Wow, so the default max AI turn length is roughly 60 seconds? No wonder the turns take so long sometimes! Especially when playing against 4-5 AIs.

I’ll have to give this utility a shot and see if it makes any difference.

When you first start the program, what do you need to type in for the "Game Path"?

Probably something like C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Heroes of Might and Magic V, or whatever you selected when you installed the game.

let us know how the trials go, if the ai turn times can be tweaked successfully then this may help my enjoyment a LOT!

@soupnazii

The line is not in there by default, you have to add it to the end yourself.

@AngelEyes

The utility is not required for changing the max turn length, but it would be good if it contained the option a few others that are available in user.cfg

I set it to 1000 and it made one of Myythryyn's extra-large maps a whole lot more playable :) Unfortunately, 6000 and 24000 weren't short enough, especially given the large number of AI players.

1000? The AI wont even move any of its heroes most of the time. Seriously 18000 is as low as it should ever go... if you think it needs to go lower than you misunderstand just what the variable does, adjust the speed of the AIs movement instead.

Interesting.... so the AI movement speed actually affects the turns, even when they are not visible on the map? (i.e. still in the fog of war). Ok, I will do a bit more fiddling :)

BTW even at 1000 the turns still take 2-5 seconds for each player (there are a lot of these pauses where all the game animation stops).

@Masotime

Yup, when the bar is moving thats when the hero is moving, when it pauses thats when its either in battle or calculating what to do next, its a real pain that you have wait for AI players to move around... it would bet better if you could toggle it off.

Because of this AI turns should take about 8 seconds even when they are moving around at the fastest speed setting... if the bar doesnt make it to the end it means their hero didnt do anything. I think the bar represents the total movepoints of all the AI's heroes.

@stefan.urlus

I wonder if they even build units at that setting :P

When I tried to install the program, I had many blank buttons. I just clicked where the "install" buttons tends to be. Anyone see this too?

There is no installer, you will have to ask the person who made the app as to why its happening.

First time you must click the left button "I accept the licence agreement" the button on the right side is "exit". Then it will asks for paths to the game and shows main dialogue.

Hence you are still seeing many blank buttons I assume that you are already in main screen, but you are missing correct codepage or another similar things. Also did you downloaded it from the given location?

Great. Many of you guys say the AI is pathetic (not smart) and you 'force' it to end its turns even faster, so the AI being really dumb is not only Nival's doing :p
