Games of the Year at GameSpy

Unread postby Angelspit » 19 Dec 2006, 21:26

GameSpy kicks off the annual recapitulation period with its PC Game awards. A Heroes game, Company of Heroes, is both the real-time strategy game and the game of the year. Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords beat Heroes of Might and Magic V in the Turn-Based Strategy category, while Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War -- Dark Crusade is crowned the best expansion. Heroes V and Dark Messiah were ignored for the Best Music award, perhaps the category where they had the best chances. The biggest disappointment was Gothic 3. GameSpy notes that 2006 has been a great year for strategy games and their expansions, but blame the publishers for the quiet policy of "release now, patch immediately" that now plagues both the PC and the consoles.

No real surprises there, I for one, wasn't super excited by the music in HV, though it was certainly decent

Speaking of bad trends: http://www.gamespot.com/special_feature ... tml?page=4

So, is Company of Heroes really worth playing?!

I think this is just pathetic
http://www.gamespot.com/special_feature ... tml?page=9 FF5 beating FF12 that just so wrong on many levels. I havent played 12 and I dont want too. But I guess I dont need to explain being disappointed in new games when compareing them to older versions of to you guys/girls.

Dark Messiah actually won first place in one category: Most disappointing game, with a comment "so close, and yet, so far".

Company of Heroes is a superb game. Try the demo before you play - it gives an idea of the atmosphere and playstyle you can expect. The cover system is superb, destructable buildings etc mean the battlescape changes. The game still needs some balance tweaks, but it is very good.

I'm not surprised HV didn't get any awards, - although I have enjoyed the game very much..

It's funny to see consoles now being plagued with the 'patch it later' phenomenon we've been seeing in PC titles for some time.

Its not surprising that HOMMV or Dark Messiah were ignored..........it seems to me that the Gamespot and Gamespy Reviewers are enamored of other Game Types and not really into Turn Based Strategy, but Action Adventure or First Person Shooter or RTS or RPG or MMORG or Online Massively Multiplayer types that CNET or IGN like! I have not agreed with thier picks of the Top games, with a few exceptions, for the last 5-6 years! And like the Movie Critics if the Gamestop Guys like something ,

I usually don't........just because a game got a decent review doesnot make it a a good game to play! the one thing i do agree with is ........don't release a game and let the buyers finish it for you!!!!! Take a leaf out of Blizzards book an don't release something that is not finished or polished! Just My 2 Cents!!!!

The Bad news is that HoMMV did'nt get 1st place. The good news is, is that the franchise of HoMM is still alive. A couple of years ago we were'nt even worried about 1st place. We just wanted Heroes back. :-)

If H5 had gotten 1st place, that would have said more about GameSpy and the other games in the genre than H5 itself, I think... A "Game of the Year" should be an unconditional success.

To be fair Gamespy weren't really that far off on most of the counts.

Company of Heroes is questionable for 1st place and though it deserves it on the one hand, the decision must be heavily biased. It's just come out.

I'd agree with it's placing, had it not been another WWII game, because now it really has just gotten silly and I find it very very hard to play them, which is why I had to give my copy up to a friend. It would have slipped three places for me and left the others in the order there.

You cannot deny that Galactic Civilizations II IS genuinely a superior turn-based strategy game to HeroesV, I can't see it being a question. Not least because it is so much more polished and smooth in the running and gameplay. So I'd say Gamespy DO know what they're talking about here.

You must also remember that they have put a foreign, low-budget, low-graphics, TBS/RPG in 4th place for Game of the Year. It's what SR2 deserves, but hardly something I believed Gamespy of actually noting.

Finally, music, you have to have played Dreamfall to see how beautiful the score to that is (I say score because the game is so much like a movie) and how brilliantly it is realised. The music in H5 and DM is good, but it isn't best realised in the games. I could see any of the previous Heroes games possibly winning in this category (could be a close thing), but not H5 put up against Dreamfall.

As far as I see it, Gamespy have gone and done a Christmas miracle and actually got something right (nearly) for once!

Seems about right, yes.Although I wouldnt count DM as the biggest disappointment of the year in front of HV.But still it beats RAII and EEII by a lightyear.

Agreed, from what I've heard DM was largely well-liked barring those who couldn't get it to work, with the main complaints being that it was too short and had a weak ending.
