Argh! NO SCI-FI, NO SCI-FI, NO SCI-FI! There are tons of Sci-Fi PC games out there if that is your thing. I have played so many fantasy (?) RPGs' over the years, with my characters armed with bows, swords, magic, etc. exploring the countryside (or city) only to discover: "Oh look, there's a rocket ship. Maybe we can fly it around the galaxy shooting at other ships!" Once again, ARGH! By the way, I bought and played all of the Might and Magic games, but hated the whole idea of flying planets/ships. Mostly I played them because I was starved for fantasy RPG, and there wasn't much available. And just in case my comments are too subtle - NO SCI-FI!

I am a big science fiction fan - have thousands of science fiction books. I played exclusively science fiction games until Dungeons & Dragons came along. I have played and enjoyed all the Might and Magic games. HOWEVER, I always found the SF in M&M to be jarring and totally unnecessary. It is a wonderful fantasy world and should be left as such. The SF doesn't add anything to it.

Yeah, who needs rockets and other planets when we can have Planescape!

The portal system is just fine enough to go to other exotic places (planes).

BTW, someone is already modding NWN2 with a Planescape campaign.

And there are two PS campaigns for HoMM4: Planewalker. They are excellent! (https://www.celestialheavens.com/76)

SF is okay as long as it stays in books & movies … not in my fantasy games please. :hoo:

Swords and Saucery is a distinct genre (like steampunk) and I have no problem taking it for what it is. In fact, I'm pretty sick of LOTR rip offs and would enjoy some added races, artifacts, and powers. What bothers me about M&M is that the high-tech elements inevitably appear late in the game, and suddenly all my hard won skill in swords and shields takes a back seat to laser rifles and ray guns. I think Wizardry does it much better, making it clear from the start that space traveling alien races are part of the milieu.

In mm6 (my first mmgame) and later, in mm7 the surprise and delightment is TOTAL when I find that all the small rumors and hints about "ancient weapons" is actually hints of a great lost nation, and the realization that the game-world is actually a post-apolyptic world recovering from the kreegans' assault on the galactic ancient empire!! It is fundamental for the MMseries, and a large part of it's mythos

What Cleanpea said. If it didn't have the sci-fi background, the Might and Magic series would lose a lot of its depth (and has, in Heroes V, though I daresay that’s not solely because of a lack of technology). There's only so many times I can face down the evil lich lord/mad wizard/horrible monster before it starts to get old. (*cough*Markal*cough*) The technological background adds more possibilities. Not to mention contrast—like good and evil, light and dark, might and magic. And let’s not forget; the Ancients are the ones with all this technology. Without the sci-fi aspect, our chances of seeing them as more than a name on a page go down significantly. We might get a floating head ala Wizard of Oz, at most, in a “pure” generic fantasy.

(I know, I know, with Ubisoft in charge the last is a moot point.)

Also I think that the Sci-Fi is one of the essential elements that made Might and Magic series so special, even though it feels kinda weird.

I have to admit that I hated those sci-fi elements when I found them in M&M6 and M&M7, (the first M&M games I played). However, with the pass of time, I've got used to it, and I find this mix of sci-fi and medieval fantasy extremely interesting. It is a essential part of the M&M universe, without the sci-fi elements this universe couldn't be explained. This opens the question about who are in fact the Ancients, and adds a lot of possible argumental possibilities.

However it should be more subtle than in previous games. Going with lasers and fighting droids at the end of a game in which you have only used might and magic, is a bit too shocking. It should be connected more with the backstory than with the enemies we face and weapons we can wield.

With Ubi however, the sci-fi elements int he M&M universe are over.

hmm. the Ultima series, maybe?

you know, though, the "melded" ending of MM 3 & 4 was quite memorable to me; as satisfying an ending to an RPG as I can recall. As good as the ending to the Ultima 7 series.
