VE Report: Girls Do It Online

Unread postby Kalah » 08 Oct 2006, 20:38

<a href="/http://ve3d.ign.com/#737846">Voodoo Extreme</a> report that, according to a recent study, about 2/3rds of all U.S. online gamers are female, though the boys still hold a 2-1 margin as far as gaming overall in concerned:

<centre><i>The research found that among the roughly 117 million Active Gamers in the U.S. in 2006, more than half (56%) play games online, and that 64% of all online gamers are women.</i></centre>

Girls it seems are social beings, travelling into cyberspace to entertain themselves and others by interacting directly with other human gamers, whereas boys lock the doors, draw the blinds and shut the lights off to enter a world of solitary gaming. In other words, we're anti-socials, they hook up.

Nah, I'm kidding - if any of our readers are parents, this study seems to confirm what many others have done already: gaming (online <i>and</i> other) is very much a social experience:

<centre><i>Active Gamers spend upwards of 5 hours a week playing games socially, led by teenagers who are socially involved in gaming about 7 hours per week.</i></centre>

So MMORPG's are all their fault too. Figures.

I think you'll find the figures include a lot of casual games, eg. msn/XP games.

If you have XP, go start/programs/games and look at all the ones with "internet" in front of them and then go into the latest version of msn and look at the list of games there. They, along with other casual (and usually free) games, make up the vast majority of games played online. And they tend to be played more by females.

This must be wrong. 56% * 64% = 35.8% of gamers are females who play online.

It says there are more than twice as many guys as there are girls, so this means there's over %107 of people.

Doesn't add up right.

I'd agree that more than half of online players play female characters, (when available) though.

Nice survey..but it did it or did it not map the type of games to each group ?

the fantasy i think would be more the territory of girls and action/combat would be the guys terf.

Btw im a heavy gamer in BF2 . anyone else here ?

Interesting. Tis is quite the opposite in my country.. I hope the survey doesn't have its sources from the characters played in online games. There are more female characters in MMORPG, but that doesn't mean more girls are playing it. ;)

Ever heard of aproximations?! And embelishment? 1,7-1 doesn't look as good as 2-1.

Of course you're a myth. That's because you're female. If you were male, you'd be a mythter.

I hate it how people report things and don't make a difference on simple msn/WinXP games and RTS/FPS/MMORPG ones. Like there's any women at all in competetive circles that aren't Korean....

And I don't count msn/WinXP games as "games" since "games" in my mind are challenges of life and death like RTS and FPS. Friggin minesweeper don't count....

Funny how there are quite some women in here :-D How old are you and what type of games do you like? And are you playing competetively?

Competetively means playing to win.

p.s: How many here except me thought of something different than games when they saw the topic title?? :D
