Heroes at the Crossroads

Unread postby Angelspit » 03 Oct 2006, 13:31

With the upcoming release of Dark Messiah and the Hammers of Faith expansion, the Might and Magic series is getting closer to a crossroads. For the first time in more than 18 months (and, well, we knew long before that point that Heroes V was being developed), no officially announced game will be in development. Scary, isn't it? Or maybe not. With Heroes V selling well despite an eventful development cycle (Save Heroes!), with Dark Messiah getting very positive previews, it is safe to assume that the franchise is back on its tracks. After a hot Summer, things are even more calm on the official forum, where threads such as What Are Our Demands have died down and been replaced with more casual discussions.

Just for fun, let's ask the question again: what are our demands? What kind of patch, expansion or game would you like to get next? What do your see in your crystal ball for 2007 and beyond?

Might we see a second expansion to H5, or a first to DMoMM?

I think MMX is still at least a year away from being announced if they've decided to pursue it (and they should!).

Yeah, they should definately do MMX. That's the game I'd like to see the most. I just feel that the old MMVII(I) graphics are the best, even though I know they wont/can't use them... Sadly... Second most would just be a second expansion for H5, or a new H6 some time in the future. Mostly a new game i guess...

I like to think its back and strong again. Ubi Soft has always been one of the higher quality game companies (anyone remember Battle Isle?). I believe Ubi has the sense to take a good product and run with it.

I wish Ubi hired Triumph Studios ("Age of Wonders") for H6.

By the way, what happened to Heroes Online? The concept art was very promising.

Lots of expansions!!!

HommV is fine. No need to get another game (with increased system req) until 4-5 years!

Of course, I hope that Ubi will finally announce that Might and Magic X is in the works. :) Hopefully another expansion for Heroes V (remember, Heroes III and Heroes IV had two expansions each) and if possible, a sequel for Dark Messiah if there will be a room. I don't have any doubts that Dark Messiah will be a great hit and this would be a good genre for Ubi to continue. Maybe they'll use it as a base to start to work on Might and Magic X with even more modified Source engine, who knows. And Arkane could be a good candidate to do it.

Any other nice suprise from Ubisoft would be welcome as well. :-D

Ubi should follow Relic entertainment example (DoW: Dark Crusade) , releasing a 2nd expansion with 2 new towns!!

At the moment the main thing I want is for them to finish tinkering with the H5 game and to issue a final patch.

I'm really eager for a Naga town. Bring on the wise reptilian worshipers of Shalassa!

And speeding up AI turns would be a big plus to gameplay.

Hmm, textboxes... As a mapmaker, I definitely miss the ability to pop up a question box for the player to select one route or another. If the option is there, I sure haven't found it.

Yeah, how hard would if have been to make textboxes for the game too, certainly not as hard as cut-scenes.

I thought I read something about Caravans being implemented. Was I wrong, or am I just not seeing it?

The best thing from H4* and it wasn't brought along. (sigh)

Is there any way to make random maps? They'd have to be scriptless, I would presume...

Not really.Acording to all of the polls, caravans are wanted by more than 90% of the people.Thats why they decided to bring them back in the expansion.

"where threads such as What Are Our Demands have died down and been replaced with more casual discussions. "

that's because people have got bored and moved on to other games, not because the game and its situation is really any better at all.

in commercial eyes, H5 was a success, only because of the existing fanbase from the previous heroes, in the players eyes, it was a failure, and i doubt many will buy a heroes 6 or the expansion (Though, like me, many probably will get the expansion in the vain hope that with the added features and content the game might feel better and more like a real heroes game, which i dont think it will)

and yeah, for me the ability to add a text box before events is a real downer, and not even possible to enable / add via means of modding. good game Ubival nicely done.

I think the reason why they never included them is not because its "quicker" to play the game without them, but because we all KNOW Nival are not very creative (come on) and couldn't think up decent lore / story boxes to save their lives. and on top of that would have to translate all that text in 10 different languages too, and in each patch!
