Who is Ubisoft?

Unread postby Psychobabble » 19 Aug 2006, 23:17

Image The latest issue of the excellent Escapist magazine is all about Ubisoft, current owners of our beloved franchise. It turns out the company itself is something of an enigma, as the editor notes in the issue's introduction:
They've been around forever and who doesn't own at least one Ubisoft title? And, well, I don't know anything about them. How does that happen? Who is Ubisoft, anyway?
...
What we didn't know is how hard it would be to get anything at all from Ubisoft. There's a reason no one knows anything about Ubisoft - they don't talk to journalists. I'm not complaining; I'm really just not sure what to make of it.

In the issue are articles on what one writer considers the defining features of the company's games, Ubisoft's strategy of using offshore development teams, the controversial Ubisoft-sponsored Frag Dolls clan, Tom Clancy games and the oft-overlooked (and excellent) Beyond Good and Evil. The whole issue is worth checking out.

That seems to be an Ubi fashion. ** So, actually, our Milla is better than all Frag Dolls, as she is genuine gamer. :wave: (:shh: rest of the comment deleted--)

Its a little strange for a gaming company not to talk to journalists and use it as a chance to plug their products.

Yeah, it weirded the editor out and I can't really understand the policy. It seems to be a fairly longstanding one, though.

Wait a sec...don't talk to gamejournalists..? Gamespot visited Arkane who is creating DMoMM just a few days ago. Sure, they're not Ubisoft, but they're working on a game in which Ubisoft is the owner, the publisher.

So what exactly does the escapist magazine mean?

Btw, who gives a s*** anyway?

Based on a game of Dark Messiah I played against two Frag Dolls recently, I'm pretty sure Milla could beat them at several games.
I'm on Steam and Xbox Live.

Awwwww!! Aww, aww, awwwww!!! This was the very first 3D-game I ever had! It came together with a P II 266Mhz, 32MB Ram... oh, I have played this P.O.D 2 for SO many hours... I can't count it.

The story in this game was really ludicrous, but the actual in-game atmosphere was so perfect, so immersive, so incredible...

Gosh, I really loved that... oh, the old times. What a wonderful time that was XD

And Ubisoft had a rainbow logo back then :D
What the #$*! do we know?

I have only bad experience with ubi.Theyve managed to destroy two of the games I simply adore(prince of persia and heroes),and release a graphical marvel that is the blandest(I know,its not a word,but still :tongue: )game Ive ever played(far cry).They had one decent game(splinter cell),but its nothing more than that,a decent game.The only good thing I see in their near future is DM.(I havent played rainbow six,nor rainman,so I wont comment on those).Although,they did make one of the toughest strategy game ever,and that is chessmaster :D

Talking about The Escapist and the Frag Dolls:

And unless Ubi made them sign documents forbiding it Arkane can talk to any jurnalists it wants, any time it wants.

Maybge Ubisoft is using reverse psychology: Don't talk to the media, and people will buy your games because they are curious.

Theoretically I guess it could work, but, as many have said, what's the point?

As for my experiences with Ubisoft, I have had good and bad. Rayman for the PS was absolutely horrible, it was 2D - on a Playstation! I played another one of their bad games later on called Evil Island, it was so hard to control your character and there was no tutorial or help, and the main character would lose fights to crabs and rabbits in the beginning.

Then I played a RTS game called Battle Realms, which was made by Ubisoft and was actually very fun. It had so many new game ideas that I had never seen, with a great replayability factor.

Then of course came Heroes 5, which is decently fun, but I wish for a lot of improvement as others do. Dark Messiah is insanely fun, and I only played the demo so far. Let's get Arkane to make H6....

DaemianLucifer: "blandest" is in fact a word and you should be able to find it in most if not all English language dictionaries. :)

When I got in touch with Arkane, they asked me to contact Guillaume de Butler, a marketing guy at Ubisoft. :D But I can't complain, Ubi provides a lot of support for fan sites, both for Heroes and Dark Messiah.

@DaemianLucifer : I'm curious how Ubisoft "destroyed" Prince of Persia as it is AWESOME at the moment. I just love these games. Perfectly made.

I must agree that HOMM5 isn't that insane, but what could have been done ? They replicated the Heroes of Might and Magic, in a new game, exactly what people wanted. Patches will come along... who knows?

But at the moment I'm only satisfied with Ubisoft's games, except a couple of them but heh, they can't only make good games! Especially that they don't CREATE the game, they publish it.

Lets see...A hard game with very hard puzzles,few quite interesting swordfights,great story and a race against the clock has been turned into a somewhat easy mash of no true puzzles,loads of quite boring fights and no race against the clock.Though the story is interesting(Im a sucker for time paradoxes).After sands of time I didnt want to play any of the PoP games,so I wont comment them.Basically lots of flashy pictures with no depth.While I played the original one uncountable times over and over again,Ive played sands just once,and tossed it away for good.

How about instead of a replica they made the evolution they braged about so much?Aside from the skill system,very few things evolved(lots of them even devolved).I didnt want just a 3D HIII,which is almost what we got(I say almost because a 3D HIII would be better).I must admit though,that this is not completely ubis fault,since they wanted an RTS.Who knows how that one would work out.

@Campaigner

Arkane is not Ubisoft. From what they said, Ubisoft itself doesn't talk to journalists (except wrt compulsory financial disclosures, obviously).

@daemian lucifer

You can't talk about ubi's games until you've played Beyond Good and Evil. It's not the best game ever made, but it's quite possibly the best game of the '00s. And I'm glad you give PoP credit for its story, because I liked it too. As for the game, I found it an enjoyable diversion, I especially liked the whole re-wind feature, it was very well implemented imo.

@thundertitan

That frag dolls article you linked is the one I was talking about in the news item :)
