Prisma Guide Review at the Lamp

Unread postby Angelspit » 29 May 2006, 15:40

Fans who were disappointed by the Heroes V game manual might be tempted to pick up the Official Game Guide published by Prisma. According to Sir Charles at The Genies' Lamp, that would be a mistake. While he admits that he found previous Prisma guides useful, including the one for Heroes III, he describes the Heroes V guide as a "worthless piece of rubbish." It includes information that has been on fan sites for a very long time, sections similar to what can be found in the game manual, blurry screenshots, and stats and tips from the beta. The author of the book did a better job with the artifact, walkthroughs and adventure map locations, but that probably isn't worth $20.

Prima Guide Review at the Lamp

Unread postby Angelspit » 29 May 2006, 15:51

Oups, thanks!

I bought the Baldur's Gate II guide a long time ago, and it was very good.

Prima Guide Review at the Lamp

That's disappointing, the one guide I bought was the one for Wizardry 8. Many of us bought it in hopes the extra cash might save Sir Tech. Well that did not work and it appears neither does this guide.

Prima Guide Review at the Lamp

Man, this is surprising. I have used several Prima guides, all of which were fantastic, the best being for Zelda:Ocarina of Time. Maybe there was just nothing deep enough into the game for Prima to draw out.

well the skill system is pretty deep, but gee is it too much to ask for the guide to include info from the retail release ... not the beta!! i get confused enough as it is!

Prima Guide Review at the Lamp

I had a flick through of the guide at EB the other day, and it seemed very detailed and good for a non-hardcore player. I could imagine the fairly extensive walkthroughs, with maps, would be particularly useful. I don't know what he was looking for really... is the guide not allowed to contain relevant data which happens to be found elsewhere?

I think you can get better walkthroughs online...I own the Heroes 3 guide, because it came with my game, and I did look through it. It's just... marketed wrong.

Either you should make it much cheaper, for a casual gamer, who wants to see the whole game and put it down, or you market it for the people that intend to play for significant amounts of time.

I don't need a list of the weeks and I don't need to pay for it. I can look at the in game effect by mousing over the end turn button, and being familiar with the game. If I was to pay 20 for a guide, I would want detailed number lists or other complicated in game aspects/effects which you can't memorise or check just in the game.

I think Prima should go for cheaper though, I think they'd get a bigger market that way.
