Disciples III: Renaissance Announced

Unread postby Angelspit » 14 Apr 2006, 21:07

Why they chose to do it while all strategy gamers are busy playing the Heroes V demo is a mystery, but Strategy First just announced a third game for the Disciples franchise. The development of the game started during Summer 2005 in a Russian development firm called Akella in collaboration with .Dat Company.

The game will remain turn-based, but "units will move on the battlefield using an improved initiative timer-based system. At the strategic level, unit turns will also be affected with an initiative factor that will dictate turns at the unit level and not at the Race level. This means increased fluidity in multiplayer and less downtime even in single player." And while in Disciples II magic could only be used on the strategic map (our own adventure map), Lords will now be able to cast spells on the battlefield as well. It would have been funny if Heroes had gone the opposite way. There is no expected release date for D3.

Interesting... I liked Disciples too. Though, of course, not as much as I do Heroes! :)

I agree. The Disciples series is my favorite series after Heroes of Might and Magic.
And the chickens. Those damn chickens.

Meh, I've tried Disciples. Kind of fun, but nowhere near heroes. The thing they have instead of a tactical map is abyssmal...

Another switch to an initiative based system? Is this coincidence?

Pictures 2, 3 and 4 of 4 on this gamespot link are AWESOME! *drool*

How beautiful!

Heroes 6 needs to use pixel shaders and displacement mapping ;)

Man, i hate press releases. They manage to make everything sound like cr4p. :disagree:

Why only 3 races? The Undead Hordes and the Mountain Clans got replaced by the Elves?! Oh well, at least Nevendaar didn't blow up! ;)

Disciples 2 was a solid game. No where near the level of heroes for me, but I'll probably still get this.

From the official forum:
http://www.ag.ru/articles/previews/3532
- the races will remain the same, but UH and MC shall wait for the next 2 addons [Frown] ;
- there shall be 3 campaigns, linked by storyline. Yet, you may start from each one;
- the storyline, in turn, is about a heavenly angel (female) that has been sent to restore balance in the world; love story follows [Wink]
- rod planters will become beastmasters, the beast shall grow as its master grows. The rods themselves will have defenders, and grow in power as time passes;
- thieves will be able to lead armies, but not steal from shops;
- there should be armies without a leader;
- leader will wear full armor set of 10 pieces;
- the item-generating feature, with prefixes and suffixes is under discussion;
- inventory will remain sizeless, but heavy weight shall slow the hero;
- units are able to switch weapons;
- combat shall be phased (Active Time Battle concept), quicker units may act twice before slower ones;
- units may act together in combat, producing a combo hit;
- healers may attack (wow!)
- phased combat may be with pause or with timer;
- units DO move, they have action points for that;
- party can contain up to 8 units;
- battlefield is up to 12x12 cells, sometimes some special items are placed on it;
- spell cards system is really close to MtG, but some cards may be destroyed upon usage;
- it seems that area where you can cast spells can be extended if you have a wizard leader there;
- the unit models are quite rich, 10-20K polygons;
- the terrain is 3D too, so flying is really good at times;
- the city screen is yet again 3D;
- locking units feature remains, but the branching is yet under discussion. One of the options is that you could get several branches simultaneously, but at really high cost;
- there shall be more "physical" resources: apart from gold, there are iron, wood and stone;
- there shall be "dungeons" on the map, they are the locations where one can get experience and artifacts... or die - the monsters are random;
- and the most good thing: the project is ready at about 50%, and they mean to finish it by November 2006!!!

Personaly I thought this game is a bad copy of Heroes. It was a bit boring to me though, and I did not like the combat. But I played it for a really short period so I guess I might be having a wrong impression since all of you speak good things of this game. We'll see what #3 has to offer. Now let's go back to H5.

Hmm, D2 was fantastic, but as i read through this last post, i get the feeling i'm reading HoMMV features. Wow, copy&paste rox. :) I'll wait for the demo, i don't like the direction Disciples3 are headed to, they'll lose that specific Disciples gameplay with these wierd updates. Time will tell. ;)

Disciples doesn't live up to heroes, but I will still play it, it's a good game.

:lolu: That's a relief!

It's a sad thing to see the Mountain Clans and the Undead Hordes removed, but then again, wouldn't that be correct story-wise? I can't remember exactly (it's been a long time since I played Rise of the Elves), but weren't the Mt Clans nearly eliminated in the elven wars? And I guess Mortis wasn't too happy to see her husband reject her and abandoned the Hordes...

Please, the only reason they're not in is so they can make 2 expansions each with a "new" race. I just wish they would find a better name for the elves.

What's wrong with the elves? "Noble Elves" is traditional, no fuss about it, nothing special, nothing extraordinary. Thank God it's not "Blood Elves".

The same thing that's wrong with The Empire. It's too plain. Sure it could be worse, but why not strive to be better?
