Goldstick Awards

Unread postby Kalah » 02 Mar 2012, 09:56

The Norwegian Gullstikka (goldstick; golden joystick) awards have been <a href="/http://www.pressfire.no/nyheter/PC/4793 ... nounced and while Skyrim was the big winner with a total of four prizes, Might & Magic: Heroes VI lost out to Total War: Shogun 2 in the bout for "Strategy Game of the Year". Nominated in this class along with Anno 2070, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars and said winner, Heroes VI faced stiff competition and in the end had to settle for the nomination.

The "Goldstick" is the Norwegian gaming business award since 2003, arranged by the Norwegian union of game and multimedia (NSM), an organization for the games- and multimedia suppliers in Norway. The award is given to the best releases of games and multimedia for the year 2011 and contains the following categories: Best sports game, racing game, platform game, open class game, action game, strategy game, adventure/RPG, children's game, Norwegian-developed game, handheld, PC game, console game, best downloadable, the critics award and game of the year. Also included are the studio awards.

Hehe I am actually playing Shogun Total War 2 recently. Highly recommended. H6 unfortunately lost the "heroic" difficulty comparable to Shogun 2's new Legendary mode. But H6 still has lots of strategy game potentials when the patches iron out the obvious shortcuts to victory. Graphics/sound/presentation wise I think both games are very good.

It bothers me to see Skyrim win all of these awards, because even though the combat is fun and the game is massive, it brings nothing new to the table of adventure RPGs. The graphics, combat mechanics, and character interactions are all outperformed by games like Dark Messiah, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect, which came out way before it. You would think that XBox players had never seen another RPG in their lives.

A fair point, but does a game have to be innovative in said areas to be good?

It'd be ridiculous for Heroes 6 to win anything but the troll awards.

Skyrim deserves all the attention. Despite not being very good in the character development aspect, the game is among the most free sandbox RPGs with lots of features and amazing graphics. No other sandbox RPG games can beat it in this category... Two Worlds, Dungeon Siege, Gothic, Divinity etc, are all markedly inferior.

While Dragon Age is an esteemed Bioware product, it's not very polished and has little replayability. Dark Messiah's also only good for its multiplayer FPS.

Skyrim is a good game, but it is also overrated. Very similarly to how Halo was a good FPS but was also extremely overrated.

all Elder Scrolls games are incredible games: Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim! from my point of view this is purely revolution of games!
