Heroes II on a Retro Roadtest

Unread postby Angelspit » 30 Jan 2012, 16:57

Games On Net did a little roadtest with the good old <a href="/http://games.on.net/article/14649/Retro ... II">Heroes of Might and Magic II</a> to see if the classis game was still relevant today. Unsurprisingly, the author was charmed once again by Jon Van Caneghem's masterpiece:

<i>"This is still a seriously addictive game with a reasonable degree of resource management depth and satisfyingly tough turn based combat"</i>

I find that I have a hard time playing anything older than ten years old, but Heroes II might very well be an exception. I need to give it a shot!

Heroes II was probably the best in the series. It took one great game and it made it absolutely brilliant and dared introduce tons on changes as well the most risky thing ever attempted for a computer game: include full arias for music, something that even Hollywood has never done. Besides that, it was probably the most balanced of all Heroes, too.

Well if HoMM II or III is the better game is debateable, but this is a good read.

I always liked the colorfull world of HoMMII, and the strategic depth mixed with some good old RPG.

Well H3 has the hype because it was the introductory entry to most Heroes players and already a very good game. It was a bit more rounded than H2 but didn't dare to change almost anything. We had only addition of stuff (factions, artifacts, etc) and changes in the units. It's debatable whether the graphic style is better or not, but surely music is a lot downgraded from H2.

Because I'd never get any work done.
