Changes in the M&M Brand Name?

Unread postby arturchix » 19 Oct 2009, 13:04

It seems we wonÿt be getting a game called by the name Heroes of Might and Magic Kingdoms after all - the developer team has notified beta testers that the game has been renamed to Might and Magic: Heroes Kingdoms. In light of this event a buzz has started in Ubisoft official forums to protest against the change.

Since weÿre expecting also Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes on DS, a logical question arises – does this mean all future M&M and HoMM games will carry the same ¥Might and Magic¡ name in front of the game title? If that would be true, the next possible Heroes installment, if there ever will be one, would be called: Might and Magic: Heroes VI. What are your thoughts?

Changes in the M&M Brand Name?

That was the case with Heroes V as well, even though some people didn't notice. And it was Might and Magic: Dark Messiah as well.
I'm on Steam and Xbox Live.

Well, I don't know - my H5 copy and expansions hold the title "Heroes V of Might and Magic" and DM is called "Dark Messiah Might and Magic".

What! Might and Magic is an RPG series! That's a very, very bad idea! What gives, Ubisoft not only wants to destroy the story of the NWC continuity, but also make chaos in names so nobody would ever remember the RPGs! That's evil!

FWIW, my copy of H5 has the title looking like the earlier ones- the word "Heroes" and the number large, with "of might and magic" written in small text running under the "eroes" (with the H in front of it). The two expansions that I have, however, both have "Might and Magic" written on top, and the subtitle of the expansion is listed where "of might and magic" used to be.

I never got dark messiah, so I cannot comment on that.

I'm cool with the name change as long as Heroes 6 comes our way, with a better design artist and less anime.

This idea carries alot of weight, because - and I don't know how many people saw my post on that PotD - the Youtube interview of the game developers of Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes was a hot topic of discussion because of the questionable text on the one developer's T-shirt. I checked out the video for myself, and it was difficult to tell what it said exactly because one of his legs is always blocking half of the shirt.

HOWEVER, I found one of the videos had a segment where it cuts from footage of him with one side of his shirt blocked off to him with the other side blocked off. If you grab the widget that controls the point of time in the video and move it back and forth very quickly so it switches between the pictures at a speed that makes it appear like a single picture - amidst a creature that resembles some sort of Behemoth, it clearly says on his shirt:

I don't like this one bit. It's just bad practice to rename a series after five games, especially when "Might and Magic" is already a clearly defined brand of its own. First they market Ashan as "the Might and Magic universe", now they go and warp things even further.

I mean, why does Ubisoft feel the need to rearrange the series title of all things? Is it going to boost sales - no. Is it more recognisable - no. Is it more easily spoken - no. You can bet I'll be "protesting".
HOWEVER, I found one of the videos had a segment where it cuts from footage of him [...] it clearly says on his shirt:
Yeah it's all over the place. Here's really hoping it's a preliminary title, or a bad joke.

Hmm... you all didn't noticed what was and is named Ubisoft's HV site? :P
It always has been named like MM:(HV, DM). Probably as always - random marketing sentence - and we all know that menagers didn't know anything about gaming - they see only moneys, excel sheets and so on.

And no - I never liked this "MM:...", same as 3DO's "...of Might and Magic".

If you google for early H5, HoF and TotE boxarts they are all using the Might and Magic: Heroes 5 label. There were small uprisings in Europe before any of those went gold so they changed it to classic version on at least some of the boxes if not all.

IMO they've done way worse things to the franchise, next to which the name change feels like nothing. So from my perspective I don't understand what all the fuss is about. TBH, I think I actually prefer that they call it differently. It kinda makes sense: it doesn't feel like the old games, so it better not be called the same...

I wouldn't mind if they called it something entirely different, like Magical Heroes or something, but this just causes unneeded confusion!

Seems to be a minor but unnecessary change. Seriously, of all the things to get up in arms about, a colon is not a big deal...

This is a silly change. I could understand if they wanted to streamline the names better, but this is already well streamlined. The word Heroes being before M&M does not hide the connection between the two games. On the other hand, having HOMMVI as MMHVI will place the two games next to each other alphabetically (assuming they're not being categorized by genre) which may slightly increase sales because new people might see the connection because the games are side by side. And anyone who already plays and doesn't know of the change will ask someone who works at the store where HOMMVI is and if the person who works there is smart, they'll figure it out and point them in the right direction. I still think it's a silly change and in the grand scheme of things won't change anything at all. But worse things have happened.

I seriously doubt that they care about it. The old generations will not forget about old M&M RPG's and the many from newer generations won't care about them with or without Ubisoft's help.
I am back and ready to... ready to... post things.

M&M: Heroes 6 sounds stupid. They need to fire their marketing guys. It's never a good idea to confuse people with stupid name changes, just ask Shaz... i mean Cpt Marvel, though that isn't their fault i guess.

Way easier to just keep the order but have the M&M part encased in something like the pic in the OP.

With our help, they could care. Even if you look at the projects like MMX and MMT, they have a generic naming scheme, and that could eventually cause confusion.
Though the point that it will stick out of other HOMM games is a good one... I agree with TT, if it's just floating around somewhere, it won't cause too much confusion - the name would look like "(Might and Magic) Heroes VI", which does make sense.
