Ubisoft Report Q1 2009-10 Sales

Unread postby Kalah » 01 Aug 2009, 12:33

Ubisoft have <a href="/http://www.ubisoftgroup.com/index.php?p ... eported</a> their sales for the first fiscal quarter ending June 30th, 2009. As one might expect in these credit crunch times, things haven't been going so well:

<ul><li>Q1 sales are down 51%, to €83 million from €169 million in the same period last year. Sales came in 12.6% below the guidance issued when Ubisoft released their sales figures for Q4 2008-09.

<li>Q2 sales targets have been revised downward; sales are now expected to reach around €80 million, a 54% decrease on Q2 last year.</ul>

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot explained the reasons for the decline:

<i>"We are currently experiencing a very sharp slowdown in our sales for Nintendo DS as well as sales of back-catalog titles, in the context of a market that is tougher than anticipated. This will have a significant impact on our first-half showing.</i>

Ubisoft Report Q1 2009-10 Sales

They blamed ds piracy which is complete nonsense. Their ds games(here's hoping Clash of Heroes will be an exception) are complete and utter crap. They're flooding the market with shovelware like Imagine: My Babysitter and Petz: Hamsterz as well as horrible ports of other games. Not only are the games horrible, but they're also likely to be in the least pirated bracket of ds games based on their target audience..

The only exception I can think of is Anno 1404: Dawn of Discovery which might be decent.

Anno on DS and Wii was indeed quite nice.

Somehow I don't think a good E3 showing is going to help their sales any in the next half-year. :P

But we all know that if it wasn;t for piracy sales would skyrocket... just look at the "too expensive 2 pirate" PS3... it's doing so great... :devious:

Generally I think they placed the blame fairly generally; the financial crisis, and that their games haven't sold as well as they expected. What that means is: "We grossly overestimated how much money we'd make."
