So it could actually work on Windows XP with the CD quality music and without frequently crashing? Might be nice as a novelty, because Heroes I is sort of bad when in comparison to the other games in the series.

@ Deadguy. Heroes I works with CD quality music in DOSBOX.

But once you've played through it once there's no real reason to go back. Heroes II kind of just replaces it.

I bought and downloaded this game from GOD. It runs fine on XP. I tried it briefly on Vista and it seemed to run OK. The manual and quick reference card are included as PDF files. It is fun to see how HOMM has evolved from a humble, but very well-playing beginning.

For 5$ I can buy HoMMIII with all addons ... Why should I overpay for HoMMI ? A game so old I wouldn't consider downloading it for free ?

If you're not into nostalgia, this offer might not be intended to you.

Heroes 1 is an interesting game. The spell system is a lot different from the other games and you have the added "challenge" of no Marketplaces. I think $5.99 is a great price if you want the game for nostalgia or to complete a collection. I do agree with archcorenth - once you play H2, there's kinda no reason to go back to H1.

But, but, what about the marvelously detailed plot? :)

The adventure map graphics of HoMM I are magical to me, especially the swamp setting. So that, at least, is different from later games. And the cool, cartoonish creature design that doesn't take itself too seriously. And the spells system. :)

In H2 you have exactly same swamp terrian on adventure map. :P
But H1 have one thing which lack in later games - purple dragons. :D

Is it? Then I was probably thinking of the terrain in conjunction with the (animated) creature guards. Those blue hydras looked great in front of that swamp sulfur mine. :-D

HOMM1 was a great game and well worth the 6 dollars.

Yup. I agree it's worth a measely 6 bucks. I would probably get it, but I have the CD and play it once in a while to remind me of the good old days of HoMM. It's still very challenging in its own right.

And as they are being distributed again, abandonware sites have zero leeway to claim they are the only way to get them. ^_^

So, did anybody here download the thing? If this is the Win95 version with map editor, RMG, and King's Bounty I'd consider buying it.

And did they also turn the CD audio into mp3 as with Heroes II? Although there was no singing in HI the music was also great...
