Windows Vista and Old M&M

Unread postby Ed Robinson » 15 Feb 2008, 12:32

I have a copy of Might and Magic Complete, which has M&M1-6 on 2 CDs.

I have played 6 for the 3rd time and tried to load some of the older ones. I had played 5 on an older machine with Windows 98. My others are running XP and the new one has Vista.

I am getting the message thatVista doesn;t allow DOS full screen and then the program fails to load. Doany of you know if there is some setting that would allow these older games to play?

In the meantime, I'm loading up 7.

Thanks, Ed

Hey there,

Try Dosbox. If it works depends on the Vista version you have.

Thanks for the reply. I downloaded DOSBox and it does work, kind of.

It opens a dos type window about 4 by7 and does load the game. Unfortunately, I've been spoiled and after seeing the graphics and sound, I had to bail out.

I have also got a problem with MM7 and 8, didn't try 9. They won't start, even when I set the compatability mode to XP or 98. The 3DO comes up then the game stops. I can't figure out how I just played through 6 without a problem.

Thanks again for the quick response.

You can set fullscreen = true in the dosbox config file.

Not sure what you mean about spoiled by graphics and sound?

Dosbox should work (did for me) for 5 and earlier, though I don't know about on Vista.

Did you use Mok's patch for 6/7? Again don't know about vista compatibility.

Well try the mok patches, i believe they work with Vista to, you got a MM7 patch and a MM8 patch. Although i would not recomend it, here's the patch for MM9. It's a really bad game, not just because of the bugs, but a lot of things whom made Might and Magic were cut out, but worse, the bugs were INSANE. The patch helps most of them :)
Have fun with MM7 and MM8 though ;).

EDIT: And PR, he's ust saying that he can't live with the looks, he refuses to play it because it's ugly;)

If game goes down after 3do sign, it might indicate graphic driver incopatibility with the game. Use configuration window and set the game to software rendering. It helped with my M&M8, and i played every single (1-9) game on vista so it should work.
