Might and Magic X: Children of the Void

Project Update: October 1st, 2012

It is now October and we’ve been working hard for three months solid. This project has been around for quite some time and up until this year we had not yet become truly serious and dedicated with a definite direction in mind. In July the team decided to produce a tutorial level as the first part of the game. My philosophy is, if we can to make one part of the game, we can make the other parts in the same fashion and using the same procedures. As always, we struggle with completing the massive amount of work this project entails, especially since September was the beginning of the fall semester and many project members are also students. Despite some challenges and setbacks, losing a few project members here and there, MMX continues forward.

Project Roadmap and Milestones 2012-2013
• Game editor (ongoing from October 2012)
• Tutorial region (est. November 2012)
• Tutorial town and settlements (est. December 2012)
• Tutorial soundtracks (est. January 2013)
• Tutorial dungeon (est. January 2013)
• Tutorial level completed (est. January 2013)

Project Status (September 2012)

Major Game Design
• World map version 1.0 is 100% complete.
• Programming iteration 3 is 100% complete.
• Programming iteration 4 is 100% complete.
• Storyboard for main storyline is 1% complete.

Game Mechanics/Databases
• Potions database version 1.0 is 100% complete.
• Spells database version 1.0 is 100% complete.
• Items database version 1.0 is 100% complete.
• Skills database version 1.0 is 100% complete.
• Races, classes, promotions database 1.0 is 100% complete.
• Bestiary version 1.0 is undergoing revisions and temporarily on hold.

Tutorial Design
• Designing and producing the tutorial level - IN PROGRESS.
• Dungeon is 18% complete.
• Town/Structures are 5% complete.
• Regional landmass is 0% complete (starting over to make it look nicer).
• Creature models 0% complete: 4 out of 6 tasks in progress.
• Character models 0% complete: 0 out of 5 tasks in progress.
• Environment art is 50% complete: ? out of ? tasks finished.
• Creature art is 47% complete: 24 out of 51 tasks finished.
• Character art is 17% complete: 11 out of 63 tasks finished.
• Town art is 16% complete: 5 out of 31 tasks finished.
• Soundtracks are 15% complete: 9 out of 9 tasks in progress.
• Sound effects are 15% complete: ? out of ? tasks finished.

Project Goals (October 2012)

Major Game Design
• Complete 100% of game editor version 1.0.
• Complete 50% of world map version 2.0 (touchups, add regions).
• Complete 20% of storyboard for main storyline.

Game Mechanics/Databases
• Lay out new bestiary database parameters.
• Begin working on atlas database version 1.0.
• Begin working on the skills database version 2.0
• Begin working on the items database version 2.0

Tutorial Level Design
• Complete 50% of town 3d models.
• Complete 40% of dungeon 3d models.
• Complete 50% of creature 3d models (3 out of 6 tasks).
• Complete 100% of town art (31 out of 31 tasks).
• Complete 75% of environment art. (? out of ? tasks).
• Complete 50% of character art (32 out of 63 tasks).

Concept Art Digest: October

This month we are releasing more concept art - in particular some of the human NPCs that are being designed. These are going to be the peasants and nobles that roam the world - at least the human parts of the world. There will be a variety of races that you will encounter, some friendly and some hostile. The concept art is designed by artists primarily to inspire the level designers and 3d modelers, and provide reference images and examples of what the game could look like. Concept art remains very important, and even more so when we're talking about specific characters in MMX.

3d Ad

3d design is the most important aspect of game design for Might and Magic X. For this fact, we require as much help as we can get in the Level Design Department. We do need lots more help in order to produce 3d models, fully detailed, textured and, in some cases, animated, in a timely manner. To achieve this goal, the MMX team is going to release a 3d advertisement somewhere in the middle of October to recruit more 3d designers to join us. Talent is a must, passion is a must, and work ethic is a must. Needless to say, you must want to develop a super awesome video game and have what it takes to work hard at it!

Worldbuilding

What makes the worlds of Might and Magic so fascinating? The MMX team will set off this month on a journey to figure out this mysterious phenomenon that immerses and literally consumes you into the virtual world. Be ready for multi-dimensional characters, flourishing, lush, diversely populated regions, complex histories full of emotional turmoil, obscure dungeons that might make you cry, and mind-blowing, sometimes sinister plot twists and devices. Yes, this will certainly be a game to remember. We, the developers of Might and Magic X solemnly swear to put our hearts and soul into the game we’re creating. If you’d like to be a part of this nonprofit collaborative, now is as good a time as any!
