LOE - Random Encounters or Stationary Enemies?

Unread postby legendoferthia » 05 Apr 2011, 21:09

I just want to take a quick poll to see what your preferences are. I have two options in regards to encounters. Option 1 is random encounters as you walk across the map, or option 2 is stationary enemies that you encounter by collision (similar to HOMM), and it will allow you to clear maps.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make the enemies move on the map at this time because I have done some heavy modification to the code that helps prevent serious lag.

The old methods of the original script were poor and would cause terrible lag even after only 30 events were placed on the map. With my modification, I can have over 150 events on the map with no lag.

I think the best choice is to make common enemies random (but type and level linked to the area) and to have an option to escape on encounter or notice them from 2-3 tiles away.
Futhermore I'll suggest to make some enemies placement fixed, as for bosses or crucial step fights. Is it possible?
I've played and enjoyed many RPGs:
MM6,MM7,MM8,MM9, Fallout 1&2, Planescape Torment, Torment: ToN, TES3, TES4

I prefer visible, stationary enemies to be honest. They're truer to MM3-9.

I'd vote for both, only there isn't a "both" option. :P

At default I can use both. However, the goal is for the main encounters not the boss like encounters.

I find with random encounters, battles may become endless and your heroes will die a lot more. With the stationary encounters you can clear the map and get more exploring done. My goals for that would be to respawn the creatures back after year with my implemented schedule system. Another thing I could do is set the random encounters to very low and every now and then you could be ambushed aswell.

So many possibilities. My mind is getting consumed and ready to explode, LOL!

Random Encounters, not visible on the world: it is good to have a probability to encounter a riding troops or fall into an ambush.
Stationary Enemies, visible on the world: not only boss enemies, but also some guards of the passages. They may have distant attacks, or cast some spells distantly, as well as player characters.
Stationary Enemies, not visible on the world: why not, it means predefined ambushes.

Well, I have some more good news. I did some more editing on the script last night, and I think I may have found a way, without lag, to make enemies both visible and mobile on the map. The problem I am facing right now is that all enemies on the map are going to find you even if you are on the other side. So, after work, I am going to try and fix that.

if this game's meant to be very hard, then it's probably best if there weren't many random encounters. my 2 cents.

It has been done! Due to the nature of the difficulty and the game (Nobody wants to fight a black dragon every 10 seconds!). Enemies will be visible on the map and will chaise you when in range. It will allow you to clear the map and get more exploration done. Enemies will respawn after a year.
