new multi-layered paper dolls

Unread postby vladimir-maestro » 01 Nov 2010, 20:10

here is an example of layered paper doll and layers:
Image
you can see my vision of architecture of paper dolls.

i suggest to use 2 layered armors cause armor could cover not only front side but be visible backward - like skirts or tassels in my example. the same for the cloak - colar above the armor and the cloak itself behind all layers.

"naked" body and basic clothes are 2 layers
cause you can choose your character and clothes it should wear in different way. if is is possible you could tint it to change a color.
the basic clothes could be different and even bulge throught the body - cause when you will wear an body armor, layer with basic wear will be turned off and you won't see old basic wear. but if you will remove an armor - basic wear will be putted on again.

plus i discover ideal pose for the figure! in this pose person will weld any kind of weapons and shields without any tricks
---
but i separate armor very much - body armor, pauldrons, armbands, tassels, pants...maybe i should to weld it all in "body armor" and thats all. too difficult to create so many different armor pieces and then pray they to fit any armor types.

what do you think? do you like new paper doll style and way it is? any suggestions?

It would add another level of playing to the game. What do you have in mind for this? Your example looks really good. Did you create that yourself, if so, how? If you don't mind me asking.

It looks great!

I like the new pose, and the layers do open up possibilities. However, I agree you should probably merge some of the layers. It would be very difficult to get many different pieces to mix & match without having a lot of issues.

Adding tints, as you mentioned, would be a nice way to add customization for the player to choose from. I guess something similar could be done to change the background?

I'm very interested to see what is being created with this.

I have idea about three layers
A leather (clothes which can be made from weak material, silk or leather)
B chain (on clothes you can wear chain armor, chain hood, gauntles)
C plate (on chain you can wear plate, steel helm on chain hood)

So there could be for example three layers of hat, well in fact i think knights wear three: material hat, then chain hood and helm

Layers could be available depend on skill (and skill depend on profession)

Mages only leather layer (ofcourse its just name it dont mean that its in fact leather clothes)
Cleric leather and chain
Knight all of them

Ok but player will dont see what is under, so have idea about switch, some three buttons below paperdoll which show only one layer or all of them

Cloak will go to leather layer, but hey maybe there could be also chain cloak? but you could use only one

For jewelry maybe better other window, too small to see on paperdoll, even bracelets (i remember that in rage of mages necklace and bracelets was on paperdoll and cause troubles because was so small and hard to change, check what you got) and there could be also earrings

I dont think its good idea to wear many parts of one armor layer, because it totally can confuse player. Shirt and pants as one, in plate is even more parts, probably better made many armors instead of spend time to develop many parts of only few armors. In daggerfall is only few different armors and many material quality (different color) they stuck in such idea and i think its wrong to follow it

Probably good idea to require strenght amount when try to learn new armor skill, already in m&m you can wear plate with very low str just because you are knight, i known its fantasy world but its strange. And when something decrease str (like disease) then chain or plate layer will stop work, player will still wear it but lose its AC

Pose is good, just everything beside seated. Females could have totally different pose because thier all clothes will look different anyway. These from mm8 are so good that i cant imagine better.

BTW this graphic is very good

sherwin_p - daz3d.com
daz|studio is free to download there + basic models too. it is very easy for me to use such content and change it alittle than to create it from zero.

koval - interesting idea but got some difficult tweeks to prevent poping through.

maybe there should be some kinds of such undergarment armors that will be as close to body as possible without any bulges, horns, pauldrons etc.
---
i'll post PSD file with all layers soon for you be able to play with it by turning layers on\off.

just a concept.
my thoughts about possible future of paper dolls.
now many games use 3D engines but paper dolls still could be cool.

maybe in the future i will use this experiment, or some people will look for it and use it too.

actually i was thinking abou MM online with flash engine in a style of MM1-5 (stereometry) but with advanced features but first i need to graduate and have a diploma ;|

i doubt it because this pose won't fit coded armor position or layered MM body parts.

Technically it is possible to move armor position in the game, but the armor can only be moved right or down. It can not be moved left or up. Your probably already know this, but I'd figure I'd chime in. Nice graphic work too!

It could have MM3-style protection. 255 AC because it normally gives you -1 AC :D

In mm6 both male and female use the same armor graphic thats why they stand in the same position, but am advice to use different position for both (probably in mm8 it was most correct)
