But they could also be servants of the Gods of Arslegard.
Make you strong places to dwell and practice the evil of your arts. Build great monuments to stand through the ages and remind your followers of the task with which you have been charged. Use these halls of iniquity to perpetrate your schemes against the infestation that has taken the fields and lakes of this land from you, their rightful masters. Never forget the hatred that must finally overcome and consume mankind. Dwell in your dungeons and brood. - Sheltem the Dark

PoL is most likely srt on another planet
Whoops, I also forgot to mention - Alberon is common to both settings as well (Lord Alberon in Voyage Home, and the Life Mage Alberon in Masters of Magic). Of course there's nothing conclusive on the matter, but I think the references were probably deliberate.

I've been nursing the idea that the GG books are set in Axeoth's far future too after all, and H4 was retroactively turned into a prequel... again no proper evidence on my part, but I think all those centuries between Axeoth's eras would be really interesting to explore in a campaign or something, if done right.

Well if anyone is still interested in this debate, I just got my hands on Shifters of Might and Magic, and that Arb'Fazul guy in it states:
All worlds are connected by the Underworld.
I never played this game before, but it looks like we didn't pull those "Underworld = metaphysical plane" ideas out of the sky after all.
